Detroit River canoe flotilla planned
Detroit River canoe flotilla planned

BY ERIC D. LAWRENCE
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

American Indian and Canadian aboriginals plan to launch a flotilla of canoes across the Detroit River on Aug. 27 in a celebration of heritage that could close shipping on the busy waterway for several hours.

Organizers hope 50 to 200 canoes will launch from Belle Isle and head toward Windsor's Peace Fountain and then return to the launch site. The trip, scheduled for 10 a.m.-1 p.m., would precede a two-day powwow planned by the groups for Aug. 28 and 29 at Council Point Park in Lincoln Park that is expected to draw as many as 4,000 people.

"This is one way of trying to keep some of our culture alive," said Helen Wolfe, acting co-chair of the American Indian Movement of Michigan.

Canoes would primarily be used for the crossing because of their traditional roots. Some in kayaks in motorboats would also participate; the latter will assist any boaters who run into trouble.

Wolfe and Bryan Halfday, the American Indian Movement of Michigan's chairman, said the crossing is allowed under the Jay Treaty of 1796 that provides for passage for native peoples between the U.S. and Canada.

"If you don't exercise your rights, you lose them," Wolfe said.

A watch supervisor for the Canadian Coast Guard, who declined to give his name, said his office was aware of the event, but he could not say whether any final approval had been given. He said such a cross-border event would require coordination between both the U.S. and Canadian authorities, and a specific time for the crossing would have to be set by maritime authorities so shipping could be halted for safety reasons.

Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Port of Detroit could not be reached for comment late Wednesday afternoon.

Tall ships headed our way
Tall ships headed our way

The classic sailing vessels of the Great Lakes United Tall Ships Challenge are wrapping up their visit to Cleveland this week and heading to Bay City, their next stop.

To get there, they'll have to pass through the St. Clair River.

To track the ships' progress (so you'll know when to take your camera down to the parkway), go to http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/tsc2010.phtml

This means they will also be passing through LSC. sunglass2.gif
