Nice work on the research. It's things like this that make the lake more interesting.

What year was it written?

Very cool information. Now what I'm really wondering is what caused the lake to rise the 10' (or 6'?) since the church was built? Why is there just the church that we hear about and not a lot more structures that would have been built near the shore when the water was so much lower?

The article came from the Macomb Daily on October22,1995.To the best of my knowledge I've never seen a follow up article done on this although it would be nice. I went to a lecture over the winter given by a local historian who spoke of a lost town in the lake near the clinton river anyone ever hear of that? And thanks Pyrate Jim for help with the post I'm new to the site and still trying to find my way around. How do I retreive PM's or even know if you have one?

Welcome to the site and thanks for the article. To get your PM's, you can go to the top of the page where it says "__ new messages". If you have one or more, there will be number there, if not it will be "0". Usually when you get one, it will pop up in a separate window when you enter the site and ask if you want to view it.

I'd love to look for it this year and find it. Sure would be interesting to take some underwater photos of whatever might be showing. Perhaps a bit of local history and some positive P.R.

Reviving the thread again...
Has anyone found more info about this?
Years ago I was snorkling in the general vicinity and found remains of what I think was an old wooden barge. I was young and foolish, though, and didn't have a GPS. My grandpa has a house on the lake in the area so I've always wondered what was really down there.

I just want to say that this is so cool. I just hope that if there are any ruins of a cemetary that people dont go looting it and/or be disrespectful.

Either way, I would love to hear more about the history of it!

I wanted to comment on the golf course by St. John's Marsh. In the 60's, my stepfather owned "The Little Country Club," another golf course that was located in Pearl Beach. The Little Country Club ended up in the marsh around the late 70's. When we would be driving out to Pearl Beach, my step-dad often pointed out in St. John's Marsh where another golf course had been. The ruined chimney that protuded from there for many years near where the St. John's Marsh plaque is now was from the chimney of the clubhouse. That original golf course sunk in the 1940's sometime. The clubhouse had a fire also.
