Its been a good 25 years since I've been to D.C. (Reagan was in office) and it looks like I have a chance to return in a few weeks with the family. I know that hotel prices in the District/close to the Mall are outrageous, but what about places to stay around D.C., perhaps in Virginia, that are close to the rail line for transporation to the Mall and other points? I know some on here have traveled there and looked for bargin rates with close transportation. Where have you stayed?

Thanks.

Last time I went I stayed in Bethesda. My hotel was right near a subway stop. Looks like rooms in Bethesda are around a hundred bucks.

I always stay here because it is close to the Old District but probably won't suit your needs of transportation into DC.

We stayed in Georgetown. It wasn't too far from the mall.

It was in August and rates were slashed pretty good.

I would recommend staying in East Falls Church (but not any further, ride in starts to get a little longer). There are a few hotels right off of the orange line, safe, and a quick trip into DC on the metro.

The place we stayed was the George Washington Suites. It was on Pennsylvania Blvd and not far from a metro station.

Years ago I stayed at the Compri in Alexandria, VA. It was about a block from the metro on Eisenhower Blvd. I think it's a Holiday Inn now.

I stayed here a few years ago:
http://www.hicapitoldc.com/location_and_directions/

Quick walk to the Capitol, one block from the Air and Space Museum. One block from a Metro Station.

Just checked AAA rates for Aug and it's $159 a night.

I wouldn't stay in Georgetown if you're going to visit the mall area and other parts of DC. The Metro doesn't run to Georgetown and you'll be cabbing or walking. You can take a bus to the Metro but that's not a lot of fun.

Old town Alexandria is a decent choice. It has some cobbletown streets and a lot of the old architecture. Plus its on the Potomac river. You might also find hotels in Crystal City & Arlington, VA near Metro stops. But these are more business focused cities. Bethesda, MD is a nice area to stay with some good restraunts and a small town feel.

Beg to differ. We took the metro from the Georgetown station the week we stayed in DC.

It was right next to a hospital. Now I have to go check the map.

It was the Foggy Bottom Metro station.

You must stayed at the very far end of Georgetown away from the older area and shopping. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia.....

There is no Metro station in Georgetown. The planners of the Metro never seriously considered locating a station in the neighborhood, primarily due to the engineering issues presented by the extremely steep grade from the Potomac River (under which the subway tunnel would run) to the center of Georgetown. Some Georgetown residents concerned about outsiders entering their wealthy neighborhood wrote letters against a station, but no serious plans for a station were ever drafted in the first place.[40] Since the Metro's opening, there have been occasional discussions about adding an additional subway line and tunnel under the Potomac to service the area. Three stations are located roughly one mile (1.6 km) from the center of Georgetown: Rosslyn (across the Key Bridge in Arlington), Foggy Bottom-GWU, and Dupont Circle. Georgetown is served by the 30-series, D-Series, and G2 Metrobuses, as well as the DC Circulator.

I have lived in DC for the last 2 years and know the area pretty well now. My house is 6 blocks from the National Zoo and 5 blocks from the National Cathedral.

Looking at a map I cannot remember what station we took. Was def not that far. The part of Georgetown we were in had a lot of restaurants and kind of a Birmingham vibe compared to Adams Morgan which reminded me of Royal Oak (I liked it better).

They claim to be in Georgetown. Foggy Bottom was about 2 blocks away.
