Kent Lake/Kensington Metropark 5/19

On the hunt for bluegill -- they're bedding, very aggressive, and make tasty fish tacos. The day was hot, the wind was calm (oh thank goodness), and the fish were biting.

I wound up with a bucket full of bluegill. Big and feisty. Fly fishing with a white popper (later bright green popper), #8 hook, 2lb leader in about 1-2 feet of water on the beds. I tried this on Saturday at another Metropark, but it was windy in the morning. No deep fish, and surface lures in the shallows are no fun in the wind.

The bass were a nuisance. 13 largemouth bass boated (and released), 8 were 14" or better, and 3 made off with my lures. I took this picture at 7:30am when I thought he'd be special. Turns out, he was just the start of it....6 hours later, I left from hunger more than anything else.

For the bass, they'd either smash the lure as soon as it hit the water or a steady drag and a sudden stop would make them strike. Jiggling or making it dance scared them off. Other guys were dragging rigged worms, jigs, spinnerbaits and the bass were ignoring them. One fellow reported (practically) bonking them on the head with lures that were ignored. They were not timid, patrolling right next to the boat. Lots of frustrated fishermen leaving the lake.

The poppers (similar to the picture shown) however, they loved. Bluegills did too. After losing 3 of these (2lb test leader only goes so far in the weeds!) I started avoiding bass when I could see them. It almost hurt to type that....

Less Boating Classes, Less Accidents and Drownings?

In Oakland County, which has 450 inland lakes, boating accidents and drowning have been reduced 91 percent in six years. According to Sgt. Patrick Hatfield with the sheriff's Marine Division, there was one report of property damage and two drownings in the county in 2012, down from 35 boating incidents in 2006. All this occurred as budget cuts forced the staff to stop teaching boater's safety in schools and hold classes on site for certification, said Hatfield.

From The Detroit News: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130519/METRO/305190306#ixzz2TmQegR00

So the "staff" stops teaching boating safety in schools, and accidents/drownings are reduced 91 percent. An interesting statistic.

I would say the budget cuts worked out well.

A great first boat ride!

Well the wife and I finally got to take the boat out for our first trip on the lake. It was absolutely fantastic! The boat ran great and the weather was spectacular. We cruised out by the St Clair light and drifted for while with a couple lines in the water.
No luck there so we cruised over to the GPYC area and drifted there and Laura hooked into our first fish of the season, a very nice smallmouth bass. Hung out for a while until the big cruisers started flying around, we decided to head in and relax at the dock for a bit.
All in all a good day!!

Was going to head to the SCR, but having never tried it this year and with the tourney going on, decided to avoid the crowd and try the bay. Joined all the bass boats around 8PM and started deep in 9' of water. 1st fish of the day was a chunky 3lb smallie, next the kid hooked a nice sheephead on a worm he was dragging. Just about dark Taizer hooked into the target fish a nice 17" walleye. After the sun went down the action really picked up. Fished till midnight and ended up with 7 nice eaters 16-21" and 2 rock bass. Also caught 2 small pike after dark and got bite off once too. Seen one other boat out there trolling till just after dark, then we had the place to our selfs .

Fished with Taizer today got a late start because he was out all last night fishing with supersport. Started jigging the upper DR and picked up 1 walleye right at 20 inches, and a lot of silver bass. We decided to move to 9mile and try for some smallies. Taizer picked up 2 biggest being about 3 pounds. Didn't stay long and wer headed back to the mouth of the Dr and Taizer noticed fish explosing by the mouth of the GPYC. we decided to give it a go. To say we caught fish is a under statement. My first 20 casts i caught 19 silvers on the 20th cast the line got tangled in the lure. So i reeled it back in fihed it and the next 14 casts caught fish. Tasizer wa shaving fun throwing a bare jig head and catching fish. So we dewcided to go through the tackle box it see what they would it. Pretty much everything. Taizer is going to post the video. I KNOW there only silver bass but they were fun and faught hard, and saved a slow day.

We were putting in and my buddy who was up for the first time asked this guy who was in a Marathon wrapped boat a few questions about water conditions and areas he might recommend mostly just small talk. The guy just seemed like an arrogant a$$ . He must have saw our Ohio plates and told my buddy he should try Sandusky Bay .

Panfish

I got out early this morning with Gman2, and we did some casting for bass near the Metro Beach point. Caught a few large mouths, (really good sized ones) no smallies, on crank baits. I got one on a tube. We then went behind Gino's and did some pan fishing anchored in the weeds that are just coming up. We got a mixed bag of fish today including perch, sunnies, gills, pike, & rockies. Pretty good sizes to the keepers. Had to weed thru them, keeping one out of every 6 -7 or so. Biggest perch was 10 -1/4". Saw a HUGE pike caught in the boat next to mine. It was well over 40" by my estimate. He caught that on a 6" perch he was using under a big bobber. Gman had a big pike on that went under the boat and tangled three lines together before we could reel them in, and it snapped his line.

Also tried the spillway by the small park , and I got a big catfish and Gman caught a silver bass. A bit muddy in the spillway. Went back to Gino's after a short time. The water by Gino's was quite clear. We used worms and minnows both. The worms caught more fish. One line on the bottom and one under a slip bobber. Lots of fun and a good meal or two!

We both managed a couple smallies each...The first 15 minutes i got bit off by something huge on a Blue and Silver 3/4 oz little cleo on the drop....then around 7:30 i get a real nice 21 inch silver fish on a orange Ping A-T...i think its a coho but not positive, maybe steel? Either way its my first one. Buddy finally got his first ever walleye on a H.J. 24 1/2 incher, nice fish.... then i get a nice 22 inch walleye around 8 also on the Ping A-T.....Not bad from shore and it felt great out doing the guys on the boat nearby.

I'll be staying in Roseville and don't care of i have to make a couple mile ride to where I'll be fishing. I've heard several bad things about 9 mile plus it's further from where I'll be staying. The site for metro didn't say if it was for SCS residents or if it was public. Thanks for any help.

A Not-So-Typical Day On The Water

OMG, so glad to be home!

Let's see, what exactly happened today:

1. The boat trailer guides I had just installed bent as the boat swayed side to side before we launched, need better steel.

2. Launched my 14 foot boat with a gas motor & an electric one. They were too close to each other

when I was turning to go out of the launch area. The plastic propeller on the trolling motor chipped the tips off.

3. We got out into a nice fishing area, noticed I had forgotten my tackle box in the bed of my uncovered truck. Went back into the launch & got it onto the boat.

4. Very slow fishing, hardly no bites & hardly no blips on the fish finder. Not a major deal, can happen.

5. One of my fishing reels broke down before we even used it, but still had 4 other good poles.

6. Got huge waves from boat after boat flying right past us, again somewhat expected.

7. At the storage yard, my foot got caught on my untied shoelace, causing my knee to go right into the amber marker light & shattering the lens.

8. While putting the gas cans for the outboard motor away, splashed the front of my t-shirt with gas.

9. Got home (Phew!) & emptied my pockets before showering; Found my steel gold-colored 3 inch cross with the Serenity Prayer on it was broken in half!

10. To top it off, I was somewhat fuzzy from antibiotics I'm taking for celluitis on my right arm. Felt weird & uncoordinated all day.

But, safe & sound at home with Reggie & Stan da man.

All in all, Dave & I got to relax on the water.
Nobody we talked to at Selfridge had any real luck, real slow today.

Sure glad this day will end soon!

Festoon LEDs apparently don't like me.

Ordered 3 pair of different style LEDs for my anchor light, figuring surely something would work, and use the remaining bulbs in other fixtures.

Out of six bulbs, 3 fell apart, 1 is a dud, 1 is installed (but unimpressive and likely will be replaced), and another is still awaiting failure, er, I mean use.
Freaking China crap!

1st time the boat was not ready 2 reason fall request list not completed and the bigger reason the boat was moved from 1 building to another (unknown-not notified) by me and trapped by 7 or 8 boats- 1 day of vacation burned.

2nd time I called them and the mechanical was done but the boat still trapped in building- cancelled half day vacation-whew!
Now my question is how can they make this right if anything?- I really am not interested in ever keeping my boat at this place again but say there was something. 20% off free storage for life ok a bit much but you see where I am going me.
I just sold my boat a lot quicker than I expected and now I'm boatless. Found a 2003 Stratos that I'm considering but it has sponsor stickers all over and a lot of cosmetic wear that makes me wonder how many hours are on it.
Its killing me not having a boat ..

Macomb County Marine Division

The sheriff's marine division is getting some bad press in a couple of the topic-threads so we thought that we would respond with some of our statistics so that people don't get the wrong impression about what we do here on the lake. The marine division can assure you that we are concerned about the public's perception and read the posts on this web-site. We want to ensure that we provide a level of service that a majority of boaters have come to expect. We know we cannot please everybody but we respect people's opinions and welcome your questions and comments both good and bad. Please keep in mind that the men and women of the marine division are citizens, boaters, and outdoorsmen just like everyone else out on the lake. We wear the badge with pride and do our best to protect our citizens.

Some have expressed concern that the addition of another boat from a local city would lead to an increase in tickets being issued as part of a fee-generating scheme on their part. This simply is not true and conversations with that police chief do not support that way of thinking. That vessel is another asset on the lake to help save lives and protect our waterways. The sheriff's personnel are under no pressure to write tickets and the decision to do so is left entirely up to each officer. In 2009 the marine division issued 59 tickets but gave 347 warnings, 2010 was 138 tickets and 329 warnings, 2011 was 62 tickets and 504 warnings, and finally in 2012 was 58 tickets and 332 warnings. If this was to raise revenue, those numbers would surely be reversed. When you think about "warnings" on the water think "enforcement through education". We explain to boaters what they did wrong to bring them to our attention.

On the subject of education, our personnel have taught boater safety to approximately 5300 people in 2012. This is fairly consistent with years past in the school districts. We are heavily involved in boaters education because of our belief is that it saves lives and makes the water safer for everybody.

Safety has outweighed enforcement in statistics for 2012. While we still issued 58 tickets,we also responded to 40 Search and Rescue (SAR) calls. We had 77 boater assists(disabled boats, flare sightings, boats adrift, or boats aground), removed 17 navigation hazards (typically dead-heads), investigated 10 boating accidents and 1 drowning and responded to several ice-rescue calls.

In regards to Homeland Security grants and our work along the international border, we dedicated 170 patrol hours towards that effort in 2012. That's out of the 10,814 total hours our personnel worked last year. We would be foolish not to apply for and use federal grant money. By using these funds it reduces the need to use local funds to purchase much needed equipment and attend training by the members of the marine division. Whether people want to believe it or not there is smuggling activity on Lake St. Clair. Smugglers have used the lake since the days of prohibition and in some forms it continues today.

The average citizen isn't directly impacted when someone or something is smuggled into the United States through Lake St Clair but we have the obligation to try to prevent it from happening. Perhaps you don't see the impact of illegal aliens crossing into the US from Canada via Lake St. Clair but there are several studies that analyze the financial and criminal impact of illegal immigration.

We support Congresswoman Miller's efforts to secure the northern border and to reduce smuggling. Seven years ago we secured a boat with Homeland Security grant money but our four primary patrol boats are 14-18 years old. No one can accuse of us of wasting any government money. The safety equipment we use such as the Automatic External Deliberators, fire pumps, first-responder medical bags, etc. are purchased with funds raised by our reserve officers. The Macomb County Marine Division is a frugal but effective marine patrol.

In one of the posts we received some unfair criticism for spending too much time at MacRay Harbor. This is easy to explain as it is one of the busiest ports on our part of the lake. It only makes sense to have a stronger presence there. We want to preserve the family-friendly environment of "poor-man's" beach. You will also see us a lot in the Black Creek and in the marinas along the nautical mile.

Before we end, we would like to address Mr. ChiliGringo. We can assure you that we are always waving or stopping to talk to the kids on the lake. We have handed out countless stickers, plastic badges, and coloring books to children throughout the years. In a couple of weeks we will be taking approximately 200 kids out on boat rides as a reward for getting 100% on their boater safety tests. We do static displays with our jet-skis for children functions throughout the county all summer long. We're still doing the same things we did when you were a kid plus a little bit more. We're sorry to hear that you've lost faith in us.

I know most of the guys are out for the C&R bass season, but I was just wondering if anyone has seen (or been out) perch fishing as yet? How about the bluegills/sunnies , anyone seen any of them yet? I was thinking that I would go out for them tomorrow morning unless I would just be wasting my time. If so, I will go for the bass.

EDIT: Somehow I missed FisherBill's post about the perch fishing when I read the reports. I saw it now though. If anyone has something more to add, I appreciate it.

Co angler gas Money..

I was following a post on bassboatcentral.com. My link with a discussion about gas money to boaters in Draw tournaments...BFLs, Everstarts, etc..

The way I have always done it is...I put 50 bucks or so in an envelope with contact info and give it to my boater draw at the meeting on Friday...Then I offer to pick up ice(because the boater has to deal with the boat) and I pay the launch fee if any...I feel this starts things off on the right foot from the start...

These guys on BBC basically say that the Co angler shouldn't feel an obligation to split expenses and the boater is going to fish it either way..I don't get that at all...Am I missing something??? Maybe it is a Southern thing because they don't make the runs that we do usually..??

The times I have gone as a boater the Cos helped with expenses...

I couldn't sleep at night if I didn't think I paid my fair share for the day...For me it isn't about the money but more about showing respect for the boater's time and his equipment...

Thoughts??

Queston about two mariana's

As most know here I metal detect at poor mans beach constantly. Since I dive there I pick up all the trash including glass, cans, all metal all the WW1 bullets. Last year I even found a 100lb WW1 bomb out there. It was a practice bomb BUT nobody knew it till the bomb squad x-rayed it.

Blue Lagoon saw what I do and graciously alows me to park there and take my canoe along the edge. The owner Dave was very nice and cordial.

However MacRay and Belle Maer were pretty rude. All I was looking for was a place to park to walk in with my dive gear. Maybe its because I am not rich or a person that can act rich?

I have been in Lexington Harbor to recover a ring behind a boat and another one close to a nuclear power plant a while ago to recover a tennis bracelet under a dock

Just venting my frustration. I enjoy my hobby and also try to help others. I wanted to leave some business cards at both marina's for their customers BUT seems like they are too important to be bothered. I don't want anything but any expenses for my services, I am completly blessed with what I do come up with from all the lakes.

Looking for advice on walleye trolling

So, I am hoping that some of you wouldn't mind helping a fellow angler out. I have never targeted walleye, I have caught them while bass fishing and such, but never targeted them. My grandpa is about to turn 80 and really wants to get out on my boat with his sons (my uncles) and myself to try and get em. I do not have planer boards, and have basic tackle for bass/pike. I was wondering if I could still troll from them like I do for pike or I should use in line weights and harnesses. I am just looking for a little help from the guys who know best. I have already read as many posts and watched as many you tube videos as I can. Thanks in advance guys.

Bass fishing tomorrow with my dad

I am looking forward to getting out and fishing with my dad tomorrow. It seems like we only get to do this once or twice a year. From the reports sounds like we should head to the Mile Roads. I prefer to fish with tubes and drop shots, more of a finesse style, but it seems like the majority of the year the best bite has been on traps and jerkbaits. Question for you all, has the Mile Roads cleared up well enough that I can fish my finesse lures or am I better off fishing jerkbaits and traps? Thanks for any advice you might have.

Still any walleye up or mid D River?

Planning to hit DR for one more time this year on this Sunday, but do not see many walleye reports though. This is going to be my second trip on DR(first was very good thanks to all for info here) and any suggestion where to find them this time of the year is appreciated. I will be fishing Canadian side only. So fat it appears that upper river near Peche Island still produces some walleyes. What about mid river near salt docks or maybe Ambassador Bridge? Is it worth making 4 hour drive from Toronto or walleye fishing is almost done over there by now? Thank for all info in advance.
