Massive Sinkhole Evacuates Sterling Heights Residents
Detroit Water And Sewer Officials Evaluate Repair

POSTED: 7:26 am EDT August 23, 2004
UPDATED: 9:18 am EDT August 23, 2004

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. -- A massive sinkhole has closed a Sterling Heights roadway Sunday and evacuated several residents from their homes.

The sinkhole is the result of a sewer line that burst under a stretch of 15 Mile Road, between Moravian and Hayes, near the Villa Fontana subdivision. The hole grew to -- at last measure -- 250 feet wide and more than 40 feet deep, Local 4 reported.

The hole is threatening the foundation of several nearby homes. Resident Kahlid Iqbal is a member of one of six families who were evacuated due to the sinkhole. Iqbal's family -- including a newborn son -- is staying at a Best Western hotel.

"This is not a picnic," Iqbal said. "Yes, we want to go home."

Evacuated resident Karan Sood said, "It's very scary."

Detroit Water and Sewer officials were at the scene Sunday to evaluate the repair.

Guy Kebbe, of Sterling Heights Public Works, said there is no timetable of when repairs will be made.

Sterling Heights officials are expected to hold a news briefing Monday morning to update the situation.

Drivers are advised to use Metropolitan Parkway (16 Mile Road) and 14 Mile Road as alternative east to west roads.

Detroit Water and Sewer officials said there were problems with the sand and soil in the area years ago when they tried to put in the sewer line. The same line collapsed in 1978, sending millions of gallons of raw sewage into the Clinton River, costing Macomb County residents an estimated $25 million in repairs, Local 4 reported.

They have been doing construction at 15 & Garfield for the longest time. I guess that we all know that construction in Michigan especially that area is a never ending job.

Yea I live not to far away from it and drive by everyday. At one point I counted something like 10 cranes out there. Although I do have to say I enjoy the reduction in traffic around here.

That's was probably what the developer said when they first found the underground stream that they later built on!

Why would they let them build on an underground river? Seems pretty stupid to me.
