From today's Michigan Gongwer newsletter:

State Waiting For Response Plan On Carp

Michigan is waiting for federal officials to develop a response plan before acting on new reports that Asian carp had traveled past the barrier designed to keep them out of Lake Michigan.

Ken DeBeaussaert, director of the Office of the Great Lakes, said the state is sending staff and materials to Illinois for the planned poisoning of part of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal so the Army Corps of Engineers can conduct maintenance on the electric barrier designed to keep the huge carp from entering the Great Lakes. But he said the state was following the federal lead on the unconfirmed reports that the carp had already breached the barrier.

"The emergency response team is meeting I'm sure around the clock," he said. "The Corps has some emergency authority that's been granted by Congress. They need to use those powers."

But he also noted that the reports of carp beyond the barrier were unconfirmed and action might not be needed. "I don't want to prejudge the emergency response team," he said.

Environmental groups have called for the locks that connect the canal to Lake Michigan be closed until the movement of the carp can be confirmed.

Officials fear the damage the invasive carp, introduced into ponds as early as the 1960s and washed in the Mississippi River by floods, could do to the Great Lakes fisheries because of their size. They could out-compete many native fish for food.

I'm very pessimistic on this one. The Government couldn't find their a$$ with a handfull of fishhooks. They'll probably talk about this for 3-6 months. I say poison it now (6 months ago would have better), don't take any chances. Pull out all the stops, you can't be too aggressive with these fish. BLOCK OFF THE CANAL NOW. They will probably find a way into Lake Michigan through Wisconson anyway so this is probably futile. We must fight though.

I done some research on these carp. They have a northern range that includes parts of Siberia. The northern Great Lakes are an ideal habitat for them. With thier aggressive filter feeding they will outcompete the forage fish for zooplankton. This will upset the whole food chain here, goodbye Lake Michigan Salmon fishery.

They're not killing the carp to kill carp. They're killing all the fish downstream of the electric fence they put in place to look for the carp and so they can do maintenance on the fence.

It is better to be safe then stupid. It is meerly an ounce of prevention for a pound of cure. Kill em good, in that small area, fish will come back. They have done much worse in california to rid lakes of pike.

I like how they said if only a few got through it would take years for them to take over. We don't want any of them in here not to take over or even be here.

I agree...kill 'em good. But in reality, there's nothing anyone can do to stop them from coming. I predict in ten years the great lakes will be filled with them, the traditional fishing industry will tank as we know it, and there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it. Nature is way smarter than humans. There's a reason empty ponds fill up with fish after a few years. Whoever thinks an electric damn here and there is gonna stop the Asian Carp is just plain stupid. How are they gonna stop eggs that are carried on waterfowl legs or in bilge systems. This is not prevention, it's stalling.......stall on!

I wonder if the DNR will open a bow season on them. I saw a video once that looked pretty sporty.

I know how to kill um;

1. hold them vertically
2. use bad equipment
3. don't use live well
4. have walleye guys bash um on the head
oh wait that's how to kill ski....

here goes
1. let the ski's eat um
2. fish um during spawn
3. let them die off from a farmer dumping poo in the drink
wait that's bass...

1. over fish um
2. raise rod limits
3. increase catch limits
4. ski's eat um
wait thats walleye...

1. give um all VHS
wait thats everything...

isn't it funny how we can manage to kill off the good stuff but can't get rid of the bad stuff?
I sure hope everyone is wrong like everything else and these sob's don't ruin the lakes!

obvious a lighter look at this major problem... the only constant is people...

I don't think you realize how big the lakes are to predict 10 years and the fishing industry will tank.

Good and bad I guess. Not many there.....but they are there and where there's one there is, or has been, more. I'd almost be surprised if they're not already in the lake. sad.gif

I hear you esox, but better than hearing 1/2 the fish killed were them.

That canal is so polluted perhaps the fish killed were not edible anyways.
