The
Detroit-area U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is sponsoring a
trip next month for 200 local students on the U.S. Coast
Guard Cutter, Bristol Bay.
Tom
Angott, a district staff officer with the U.S.
Coast Guard Auxiliary, said the nighttime event
will take place at 7 p.m. on June 14.
"We've never done anything like this,"
Angott said, "but we're very excited."
Angott, who lives in Clinton Township, said
Bristol Bay will depart out of the Coast Guard's
Group Detroit station at Mount Elliot and the
Detroit River for a 3-hour cruise.
The Coast Guard cutter will take selected
students up to Lake St. Clair and back down to
the Ambassador Bridge for an instructional
cruise that will provide narration and hands-on
experience.
Brochures were sent out to over 3,000 students
who successfully completed the Coast Guard
Auxiliary's safe boating course. The first 200
students who applied for the cruise were picked,
Angott said.
"We're calling it an educational
opportunity cruise," Angott said Wednesday.
"The students will like this."
The cutter is used by the U.S. Coast Guard as a
search and rescue ship and a buoy tender. It
also pushes a large 140-foot barge, Angott said.

Fishing tackle
loaner program gears up
Stony Creek Metropark in Washington Township is
one of 32 Michigan parks that will offer a free
fishing tackle loaner program.
The fishing equipment is provided to
participating state, regional and local parks
through the Michigan Department of Natural
Resources Urban Fisheries Program.
"The grass roots partnership makes it
possible for beginning anglers to enjoy fishing
without first needing to purchase the
equipment," said Ken Dodge of the DNR
Fisheries Department. "Michigan has great
fishing opportunities for everyone and we want
anyone interested to have the chance to
try."
Dodge said a youngster turned on to fishing may
be less likely to turn on to trouble.
Participation in fishing also serves to promote
an interest in the outdoor environment and often
leads to fostering positive attitudes of
stewardship toward natural resources, he said.
"Few people have a greater personal
interest in restoring and maintaining clean
water and healthy fish populations than avid
anglers," Dodge said.
Each participating park will have 20 rods and
reels available on a loan basis along with basic
terminal tackle, including hooks, bobbers and
sinkers. For more information, call (517)
780-7902. For Stony Creek Metropark, call (800)

These
are busy days for Lake St. Clair marinas as warm
weather begins to settle in and boats come out
of storage. At Land's End Marina in Harrison
Township, boats emerged Friday from winter dry
dock.
Low water
levels and high gas prices aside, the 2001
boating season on Lake St. Clair is here - ready
or not.
For grocer Jim
Dennison that means getting his Montgomery Ward
Sea King motor boat into the water as soon as
possible.
"I've been
doing this for 25 years," said Dennison,
39, of Sterling Heights. "It's relaxing -
the boating and fishing part."
Dennison, a
produce manager at Kroger, brought his
8-year-old son, Adam, to the Harley Ensign
public access site on Lake St. Clair last week
for an evening of cruising and walleye fishing.
"There's
not a lot of boats zipping by right now,"
Dennison said, "so we can go out and enjoy
it."
Adam, a
second-grade student at Jack Harvey Elementary
School in Sterling Heights, said he likes
boating with his father, but only when the
water's smooth.
"No
waves," Jim Dennison said of his son,
"like it is today. It's not too bad out
there."
Defining
"bad" may differ from one person to
another. But boaters such as the Dennisons will
once again have to deal with low water levels
this summer.
"The water
appears to be high after a rain event, but we're
still 13 inches below the long term average for
Lake St. Clair," said Adam Fox, a
hydrologist in the Detroit office of the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers.
"We are 2
inches above the average for this time last
month (April)," Fox continued, "but
we're also 2 inches below where we were this
time last year."
Fox said Lake
St. Clair will experience up to a 1- or 2-inch
rise in water levels through June, and that's
"wishful thinking."
Many marinas,
rivers, county drains and private canals have
been dredged, which should be an advantage for
boaters this year, Fox said. And heavy rainfall
this year means it is unlikely Lake St. Clair
will experience record low water levels like
last year.
"What they
see is what they're going to get," Fox
said. "Considering the amount of dredging
that has taken place since last year, it should
be a better summer. But people who are waiting
for their canals to fill up can stop waiting.
They can't hold out anymore. It's not going to
get any higher to make a difference."
If it's not the
water levels then gas prices are getting to
boaters on Lake St. Clair.
This time last
year, Land's End Marina in Harrison Township was
charging boaters $1.99 per gallon. On Thursday,
the price at the dock was $2.39 a gallon.
"It's
expected to drop," marina manager Alex Love
said. "We've seen it before."

The 'G' List Maintenance
Tips
|
|
Galley:
Clean thoroughly, washing down all counters and
cleaning out the inside of all cabinets and drawers.
Scrub out the inside of the refrigerator or ice box,
and reconnect water lines to dishwasher, icemaker,
etc.
Gearcase:
If you failed to drain the gearcase oil during layup,
this is your last chance before the season hits full
swing. As the old gear oil trickles out, inspect it
for water, for a burned smell, or for broken bits of
bearing and/or gear teeth. Finding any of these means
professional repairs are in order. Refill as per
manufacturer' s specifications.
Gel
Coat: After washing the boat down thoroughly,
inspect all gel coat surfaces for chips, nicks and/or
scratches. Repair all these defects before waxing the
boat - either by having the yard do it or by doing it
yourself (marine stores sell gel coat repair kits for
just this purpose). After patching, allow repair to
cure, then apply a coat of marine polish or wax.
Generator:
Reconnect water cooling lines to appropriate through-
hull fittings, making certain each end of the hose is
double-clamped. Inspect hoses for sponginess and
cracks and replace if necessary. Reinstall and
readjust V-belts that were loosened in the fall and
follow the steps in your owner's manual to commission
the genset engine.
