A
Word from the Editor: Welcome
to the July and August edition of the Lake St. Clair
Network Newsletter. We decided to combine both months
this time around since things have been so crazy here
at the LSCN headquarters. From this point on, we will
try and get the Newsletter out at the BEGINNING of the
month, so we needed to do this to get on schedule.
First and foremost, we want to take a moment to
welcome our new sponsors to the Network. We encourage
you to support our sponsors and visit their web sites
to find out more information about them.
The JobbieNooner
Party on Gull Island was a great time for
thousands of area boaters. Now you can visit our
JobbieNooner picture gallery by clicking here.
Please send photos of places of interest, special
events, and just people having a great time. We'll be
sure to add them. Please submit all photos to photos@lakestclair.net.
The Lake
St. Clair Network Staff is happy to introduce our

The
hot, dry weather is making some boaters sweat over water
levels on Lake St. Clair.
"I'm
really careful when I'm out," said Donnie Castle of
New Baltimore. "I've really cut down on speed when
I'm closer to shore in case I run into a sand bar or
something."
The good news is that Lake St. Clair has an extra 14
inches of depth than at its all-time low, which was set
in 1934. The bad news is, it's 13 inches below where it
should be.
"Obviously, the lake is lower than everyone would
like," said Adam Fox, a hydrologist with the Army
Corps of Engineers in Detroit. "Things aren't as
bad as they could be, though."
Lake St. Clair isn't the only lake with lower water
levels, but the moisture loss affects the smaller lake
more, Fox said.
"Lake St. Clair is a little bit more vulnerable
than the others," he said. "Basically, you're
dealing with a lake that, in most parts, is about 10
feet deep. When you lose 13 inches, that makes a big
dent in total volume compared to other lakes, which are
a lot deeper.
"When you lose a few inches of water in Lake St.
Clair, it could mean the difference of running
aground," he said.
Van Snider, of the Michigan Boating Industries
Association, said the lower levels don't have as big an
effect on boaters as they used to because boaters have
become more aware of the water.
"When this first came about three years ago there
was a lot more coverage in the media and everyone was
really worried about it," he said. "Now,
people are used to it and they're naturally more
conscious of where they are.
"People are paying attention to their charts and
understanding where they are," he added. "They
know if they don't do this they could run into
trouble."
The situation isn't likely to improve anytime soon.
Water levels don't look like they'll show much
improvement the rest of the season.
"When it's very warm and very dry, it's bad news
for a puddle on the street, let alone a lake," Fox
said. "If it stays warm like this it will keep the
water temperatures high, which will lead to increased
evaporation this fall."

| The
Blue Water Task Force on Water Quality
held its first meeting Monday, and
Macomb County Water Quality Board
Chairman Doug Martz was there to offer
assistance. |
In
a move approved by the St. Clair County
Board of Commissioners earlier this
year, the task force was formed in an
effort to help minimize pollution being
dumped into the St. Clair River and Lake
St. Clair.
Martz warned the newly appointed board
that it must monitor Canadian factories
across the river as well as communities
upstream in an effort to find polluters.
"I'm worried about Sarnia,"
Martz said at the meeting in Port Huron.
"I'm not against Canadian business,
but I don't want them to leave behind a
heritage of chemical waste."
Martz told the task force it must first
establish a monitoring system on the St.
Clair River.
Martz described how the Macomb County
Water Quality Board pursued legal action
over the polluted Bear Creek Drain,
which essentially turned into a $90,000
grant to help clean up the drain.
Martz said meeting with members of the
St. Clair County Task Force gave him a
"better understanding" of who
he will meet with in the future.
"We've done a lot to get to this
point," said Debbie Hayes,
chairwoman of the task force. "I
don't know that we'll go out as
flamboyant as Mr. Martz. But we will
make a difference, like he has."
Hayes, a volunteer such as Martz, worked
for two years on a committee that formed
recommendations for St. Clair County
commissioners on water quality issues.
Nine members serve on the task force,
including Vice Chairman John Jones, the
Ira Township Supervisor; and Ron Pinson,
a conservation officer in Algonac.
"I'm out in the environment 362
days a year. I'm in the woods, the water
and I see things people don't normally
see," Pinson said. "I think I
can help."
Also discussed Monday night were ideas
such as community telephone and e-mail
hotlines, as well as ways members can
attend watershed council meetings in
southeast Michigan.
The task force meets next Aug. 27.

Ice
Boxes: Wash out the inside of ice boxes and ice
chests and rinse thoroughly
with fresh water. Leave door open (or cover off) for a
day or so to air
out the inside and to make sure it dries thoroughly.
Wash with a dilute
solution of Clorox bleach and water (one part bleach
to five parts water)
if there is a musty odor on the inside.
Icemaker:
Reconnect water lines and then clean out the inside.
See: ice boxes.
Insulation:
If your boat is very noisy when under way because, the
engine is not
adequately insulated, this is a good time to add more
insulation. Special
marine insulation that is not flammable can be ordered
from many boatyards
and marine outlets, or directly from companies that
specialize in such
products. Extra insulation will be especially helpful
under engine hatches
in the cockpit and the salon.
