The first lighted boat parade at Boat Town USA, the Festival of Lights, managed to miss most of the rain the weekend of Aug. 5-6.
Winners were: business under 36-feet, Gar Wood's Restaurant; business over 36-feet, Belle Maer Harbor; club under 36-feet, Windmill Pointe Yacht Club; club over 36-feet, Poor Man's Yacht Club; individual under 36-feet, Ron Jones.
The decorated homes along the route also received cash awards: first place, Bob and Cindy Karl; second, Charlotte Schraufnagle and third went to Nancy and Mike Motrinc.
Over five thousand dollars went to the various winners.
The Sea Cadet boat Pride of Michigan was unable to get into the Black Creek as they went aground on a shoal near the no wake buoys at the entrance and had to return to the Clinton River. The boat needs over six feet of water depth.
______________________________________________________________________ New weather buoy
The City of St. Clair Shores and the University of Michigan are working together in deploying an automated meteorological buoy in Lake St. Clair.
It will be the first data buoy ever deployed on our lake. The buoy will supply wind and water data to aid in the development of a system to predict beach closures and to guide county health officials in water sampling strategies.
A solar panel will power the buoy and it will have a flashing light. This is something you want to know the location of. It is secured by a ballast chain and a 1,000-pound railroad wheel.
The information received from the buoy will be available to the general public. Additional information can be obtained from Mary Jane Brunell, St. Clair Shores Communications Director at (810) 447-3414.
BBQ Salmon over Mixed Greens
Barbecued salmon fillets served with a homemade vinaigrette dressing on a bed of mixed greens. This recipe is full of flavor and color and will impress your friends.
Makes 4 servings, yields 4 to 6 servings.
INGREDIENTS: 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon onion powder 3 tablespoons white sugar 1 tablespoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper 1 tablespoon paprika 6 (6 ounce) filets salmon 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 pound mixed salad greens 1-1/2 cups tomato-vegetable juice cocktail 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes 1/4 cup olive oil
COOKING 1. For the rub: In a small bowl, combine the chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, sugar, salt, allspice, cumin, white pepper and paprika. Mix well and sprinkle all but 1 1/2 tablespoons of the rub on all sides of the salmon. Cover salmon and refrigerate for 6 hours. Reserve the 1 1/2 tablespoons of rub for the vinaigrette.
2. Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat and lightly oil grate.
3. Lightly apply a thin film of olive oil to the salmon fillets. Grill over high heat for 8 to 10 minutes, or to desired doneness.
4. For the mixed greens and vinaigrette: Clean and refresh the greens; dry thoroughly. In a small bowl, combine the tomato-vegetable juice cocktail, vinegar, tomatoes, olive oil and reserved rub. Mix well and toss with the greens.
5. To serve: Divide greens among plates. Top each plate with a salmon fillet and spoon any remaining vinaigrette over the salmon.
Bilge Blower: Make sure intake opening or end of intake hose is at lowest point in bilge. Turn on each blower to make sure it works properly. Spray electrical connections (with current off) with a moisture- displacing lubricant.
Bilges: If these areas were not cleaned in the fall, do so now. Use a good bilge cleaner at double the normal strength and let it soak overnight before pumping it out. Make certain that limber holes are clear of debris. After scrubbing thoroughly, leave hatches open for a day to air out biliges.
Cleats and Chocks: Test each bolt or screw to make certain it is tight. If a bolt or screw is loose, remove it and squirt some silicone or polysulfide caulking into the hole before replacing the fastener. Spray all metal hardware with a clear protective coating (sold in marine stores) or apply a good boat wax.
