Save Our South Channel Lights Christmas Gift Shop will be open for their annual sale on Friday, November 24th, 2000.

The store is located in the old Macomb Daily building at the ground floor lobby, 67 Cass Avenue in Mount Clemens, and will be open Noon to 5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through December 24th. Other times can be arranged by calling 810-772-1888.

The SOSCL organization is an all-volunteer, non-profit group formed to restore the Old South Channel Lights on Lake St. Clair. We have a long-term lease on the lights from the U.S. Coast Guard and recently received a long-term lease on the State bottomlands. We are now poised to completely renovate the front light after securing a matching grant.

With a theme of lighthouse and freighters, items for sale include gifts such as lighthouse rugs, trading cards, 14K gold light house jewelry, photographs and prints by famous artists. Wooden solar power deck/dock/lawn lighthouses will be on display, along with sweats, T-shirts, glassware and a wide variety of thoughtful gifts with a purpose. In addition, we have the very popular Life at the Flats, The Golden Era of the St. Clair Flats book by Michael M. Dixon.

Gift memberships are also available for that special boater or lighthouse enthusiast.

Please go to our Membership page now to see how you can have a part in this most worthy effort.

Harrison Township on Tuesday issued a stop work order forbidding the state from completing work on a seawall for a proposed public boat launch.
But a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said a permit for the seawall construction was applied for Tuesday and will be paid for this morning.

"We got the application in by 4 p.m. (Tuesday), but we didn't realize they wanted a check, too, so that will be delivered at 8 a.m. Wednesday," said Paul Yauk, a DNR planner.

Yauk said the DNR had the necessary permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to work on the seawall preparation in Lake St. Clair. Once they started working on land, a local permit was needed.

"We did what we were legally allowed to in the water and now we're proceeding to the groundwork, so we have applied for the proper permits," Yauk said.

Harrison Township Supervisor John Hart said the township's building department was prepared to head into court today to file an injunction to prevent the state from working on the site without a permit.

"We were hoping they would stop and they'd obey the stop work order, but I couldn't guarantee it," Hart said. "Once they pay for a permit, they should be good to go."

It's the latest political flareup the DNR has encountered in trying to construct a six-lane boat launch on Jefferson near Ballard in Harrison Township.

DNR officials say the boat ramps are needed to allow more access to the lake for area boaters and sportsmen.

The Macomb County Road Commission has twice revoked a permit that would allow the DNR to work on the intersection of Jefferson and Ballard to make road improvements.

A road commission spokesman has said engineers were "rushed" into handing out the permits and revoked them after further review. DNR officials said negotiations continue on that issue.

DNR officials said they paid $4.5 million to purchase the 9-acre site and spent another $2.1 million in additional modifications to satisfy concerns raised by local and county officials.

Yauk, the DNR planner, said if the winter weather is mild, the boat launch could be completed by late spring in 2001.

Marine City

A 25-year-old Westland man could face arraignment on criminal charges this week and possible jail time, for bagging a 43-pound fish out of season.

Conservation officers from the state Department of Natural Resources apprehended the man Nov. 4 with a 56-inch lake sturgeon in his vehicle, after receiving an anonymous tip from a witness.

Officials believe he caught the fish by angling off a pier into the St. Clair River. Sturgeon fishing season ended Sept. 30.

"They're virtually ancient types of fish," said Sgt. Tom Lennox, an area law supervisor for DNR in Macomb and St. Clair counties. "So the fine can be pretty hefty. There could actually be jail time for this."

Officials expect to arraign the man this week in 72nd District Court, Marine City, on a charge of taking lake sturgeon during closed season.

The misdemeanor can carry restitution of $1,500, fines as high as $2,000 and jail time of 30 days or more, Lennox said.

Lennox said the anonymous tipster stood to receive a possible $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, had he identified himself. The DNR's 24-hour hot line is at (800) 292-7800.

The 'A' List Maintenance Tips

Alternator: Readjust V-belts and tension each to manufacturer's specifications - typically a deflection of 1/2" to 1" under 25 pounds of pressure.

Aluminum Trim: Wash with fresh water and mild boat soap. Polish with aluminum polish, then apply a boat wax or a clear protective coating sold in marine stores for use on aluminum. See: masts.

Anchor Lines: If the anchor rode was not washed in the fall, soak it in a large bucket of fresh water and mild detergent. Then rinse with plain water and spread the line out on the dock to dry. Replace anchor line if there are signs of cuts or chafing, and color-code if desired.

Anchor Lockers: Leave door or hatch open for a full day to air out the inside. Use a mildew-removing spray if you see signs of mildew.

Anchors: Examine shackles, swivels and other hardware and inspect chain for signs of corrosion. Replace if necessary. Check mounting brackets that hold the anchor in place on deck.
