QUOTE(RedBob1 @ Jan 19 2009, 02:24 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>My son is completing the FlyFishing badge at Boy Scouts this winter. Maybe it will generate interest. I havent pushed at all. If he wants to learn he will.

Your'e right to not push it, but for sure make it available! My Dad never went anywhere without offering to take me. When I was too young to decide for myself, he took me anyway! Then as I got older, like 11 or 12 he let me do my own thing and never pressured...which surprisingly was hunting and fishing.

YEs, hes 12 going on 13. Plays Baseball and likes track.

He like to go backpacking and be in the woods. Time will tell. If not I will be there supporting what ever he does. Same with the girls. None of them are interested either. But I am at every concert, game, award cerimony. Wouldnt trade it for anyhting.

Plenty of time to fish after they ar eout of school.

The thing is to get them to go to college near cold water streams.

Need to get one of them to go to college in Montana or Colorado

esoxfly,
Here is the fly I was talking about. It is one of the most productive streamers I have fished. You fish it with a series of short jerks with a hesitation. It pauses in a nose up position.

That green fly without the lip might work well in this color scheme.

Should we show some post on how to tie some simple flies.

I could do a version of ant I use for everything. It has different variables I use. Plain, hopper legs, lufa foam wing, deer hair wing, lufa foam with deer hair. Size 6-14.

Go for it, but don't do it in my "muskie" thread! HAHAHA!

That's not a bad idea. In fact, I've thought about starting a "fly fishing" thread for LSCN where us few could come and talk about leaders, reels, rods and the sort.

I say throw it down and see who bites. Start an "ant" thread and maybe a variation that mimics a salmon fly, and I bet someone could use that for smallies during the hatch next spring.

I found those bills sitting on a shelf at Cabela's, and they're as small as I've seen. A few of the lure catalogs have them, but they're only larger from here on up. To get smaller, you'll probably have to look at one of the small plastic bills made for flies. I think Cabela's has those too.

Noise. You gotta have noise, and I've started using rattles on my flies. I've used them before, but mostly for salmon, which I don't think respond as well to noise as would a fish in a predatory mode. The other thing too is that you're usually putting a fly right across a salmon's nose, and you might be fishing a muskie that's sitting 30' away. You've gotta have noise.

I used these on some Streamers but the smaller flies did not look right with that hump. What I did was put 4 large brass beads between the Main and Stinger hook on the connecting line.

With those larger flies you probably dont have that issue.

Few more today. I've kinda gotten into the contrast thing; contrasting the blades to the body. I like the looks of it, and I've read three magazine articles in the past two months hailing the virtues of contrast on muskie baits. We'll see!

It's mylar. I love it. I like Flashabou, but standard Flashabou is too limp, holds too much water and takes too much to build volume. I like thicker, Magnum Flashabou and mylar from other sources that's larger, wider, stiffer and is the opposite of standard Flashabou- A little bit goes a long way, it doesn't hold water, and it still moves well in the water and flows in the turbulence of the blades.

can you recomend some mags. with some articles that a first timer can read. or any info would help. I have tied a couple flies for trout but not many, and really would love to learn to start making my own flies and lures.

When are you going to give me a lesson on the water???
