Amazing how chewed up the pike are

I hit the water today for about 4 hours up in anchor bay & managed to catch a few largies & a 23" pike on a rattlin rap & ultra light set up (4lbs test). The little pike was really really chewed up. It was still bleeding when I brought it in!

Yikes, looks like something in the bay is hungry

Pike on an ultralight are fun, aren't they?

A lot of the muskies have been roughed up as well.
my pike had those same sores im not sure if theyre spawning muskie biting them or some kind of sore. the spacing on ours looked like could of been a bite but ive caught fish with bite marks that have escaped death. you usually see puncture marks these just looked like open sores we unhooked and tossed back didnt livewell it or photo. not sure whats the cause but we got it out of boat asap. heres a 38 inch caught in oct this was definatley a bite

The pike I caught looked more like lesions rather than actual bite marks because they were only on that side. Maybe VHS is hitting the pike now to a certain degree.
the reason i think is some kind of sore was the one side of the fish appeared normal the other was nasty looking like your photo i only noticed 2 sores on my fish but didnt really inspect the fish closely and rjt unhooked with gloves on. i see 4 or 5 in your pic. unless theyre being bit and leading to those sores, hopefully mike thomas can shed some light on this. your braver then me if it would of been a cheap bait i would of just cut my line and call it a loss.
It is possible that they are fresh Lamprey sores. May be not but their shapes seems to suggest it.

When I read they were all on one side, that was my first thought too. Funny how all great minds think alike, eh Bob?

yeah my 7 yr old caught a 32 in pike on 6# test a couple weeks ago and that fish had bite marks also i think its because they are all stacked up while spawning
