The letters have been coming a little more frequently now, and we've had 2 phone calls from Jonathan in the last 2 months!!!
Since early May, he's been just outside of Mosul, engaging in various missions almost daily. They get back to the rear every 6-12 days for a day of resupply, hot showers, and hot chow.
There is still quite of bit of localized fighting throughout the region, and his unit has been involved in several engagements since mid-May.
The biggest one lasted over 3 hours....his unit of 135 men, along with 2 platoons of Spec Force soldiers, headed west to take out a terrorist training camp reportedly housing over 300 Baath party members. They went in on the ground on the heels of Apache gunship support.
As the fighting broke out, an Apache was shot down, and my son's squad of 7 men were closest to the chopper.
They secured the pilots, then handed them off to the medics. They then proceeded to secure the chopper against advancing forces, battling the enemy for nearly 2 hours. In the end, nearly all 300 of the enemy were extinguished by the combined forces, without a single American loss.
My son received a battlefield commendation from the Lt. General, and shortly after received a battlefield promotion, with an increase in rank and pay.
He is now currently assigned to the C.O. of the Command Headquarters Battallion of the 1/327th, 101st Airborne as his personal driver, while not performing his other duties as the NBC Specialist (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical), so he is out of harms way much of the time.
We hope to have him home by Christmas, and I'll keep everyone updated as we learn more.
Thanx for all your continued support and prayers.....
