Keep those fire extinguishers handy around the home.

Our oven just caught on fire. (I am no longer allowed to use the oven unattended) We had fire extinguishers handy so the damage was limited to the oven and back wall.

Tin foil left in the bottom broiler with some grease caught fire. Pretty big flames.

All is good just some cleanup. Could have been much worse without the fire extinguishers. I was a few seconds away from 911.

It happens just that fast. Go get some fire extinguishers if you don't have any in the home. If you do have some check the date or little meter on them and make sure they are still good.

Glad things turned out with minimal damage!!

There are a couple impressive youtube videos of kitchen fires and demonstrations. I showed my kid them to help impress the messages of "act quick or GET OUT", and "don't do something like that! (put water on a grease fire)"

(going to re-check my extinguishers now....)

Our daughter is 24 now but when she was 9 she was allowed to be home for a few hours on Saturday mornings while we did some work nearby. Neighbor was always home and available.

One morning she called me and said the kitchen was on fire. I asked her where she was. She was still in the house. I said get out and get the neighbor. He came over and solved the problem. A pop tart in the toaster caught fire and did no damage but there were flames.

That is the day we bought fire extinguishers and taught everyone how to use them. We also beat it into her head to watch the house burn down from across the street.

She did not toast a pop tart for several years.
