I was wondering if there are any offshore clubs or groups in the Lake St Clair area. Years ago we were part of MOCA but we stopped boating for a while and lost touch. I believe that group is inactive now. I know about OSO.com and the Metro Beach Poker run, but any other info would be helpful. We belong to a great OS group on Lake MI called COPS, but it is hard to make it there every weekend. We really like to travel to places with other similiar boats. Thanks Donna

One more question, is there spell check on this site, I really hate to have people see how duuuuumb I can be

Welcome Aboard MsPatriYacht!

Aside from what you mentioned (OSO, MetroPokerRun..) some of the offshore people from this site do a "fun-run" a few times per season. It will be posted in advance probably in the boathouse or here. It's a same day run, usually includes a lunch stop, etc. from the photos it looked quite fun!

Welcome Ms PatriYacht!

I've been running offshores on the Great Lakes & Florida since the early 80's myself.

I noticed you trailer a 43' Black Thunder . . . that's alot of boat to trailer around!

I've got a 42' SONIC that resides on my hoist in New Baltimore, though I do have a trailer & vehicle when needed.

I was very involved with MOCA since it's inception as an offshore club, but it became more of a $ maker for it's administratators than a club as time progressed.

MOCA sponsored a sister-club in Lake Erie called LEOPA that is still doing very well as a cruising/social club. We catch up with them at the CASINO BAR on Kelly's where they meet every Sunday afternoon during the summer. Fred & Michelle w/the Black Thunder 'Erie Feeling' head up that group.

There has been nothing formal in the Detroit area since MOCA.

HOWEVER, the LSCN group is beginning to break off into sub-cliques based on boating style as you've seen in BOATCHIC's link to our informal 'fun-runs'.

We've already planned our first 'club trip' of 2004 to Put-in-Bay during Memorial Weekend! Leaving Thursday afternoon from Jack's.

As see much more of this coming together this summer . . . so stay tuned!

Thanks guys for your repy, I will watch the board for run info.
Instigator, we felt the same way about MOCA, I wonder if we ever met. We used to boat almost every weekend out of Sassy in a older raised deck Blue 40' Scarab named Vice Versa. We just sold that boat about a year and a half ago, but for the past 4 yrs were so busy building a house on a lake in Waterford we hardly got out.
I see info on the Lake Erie group on the OSO board and thought possibly of going on a poker run near Cleveland in July. That's the beauty of trailering we get around, I am long past doing nothing but rafting off weekend after weekend, this girl wants to go........... We have a one ton dually and it pulls the BT pretty good, the main problem is finding launches with deep enough wells and long enough docks.
By the way how can you see the members profile on what boat they have, and do you know about spell check?????? I looked around the site a bit and could not figure those things out, but then I am blond

I just figured out how to check the member profile, plus in re reading your post I just saw your tag line. We've met several times and even did some poker runs together in the good old days of MOCA. I am Donna, Ian's wife. We thought you sold your Sonic, Ian said he has seen Chris around in a pretty sweet ride. I also heard he was driving the new OL in last years Poker Run, that boat went back up for sale before the summer even ended!

It was weird being out on Lake St Clair last year, we knew almost no one. Do you ever visit OSO.com it is a pretty cool web site and all about OffShore boats.
Talk with you soon.

Donna,

Of COURSE I remember you guys! Still have the puppies?

Nope, still got her . . . going on 13 years w/INSTIGATOR! Just repainted & repowered her!

Yep . . . the rich brother. He's got all the toys! Is having ANOTHER OUTERLIMITS built for 2004.

I've been a member of OSO for years as 1st_INSTIGATOR, but spend most of my time on THIS board.

THESE are the people you'll see on the lake!

Let's stay in touch & put together a few adventures!

My other brother Jeff & my Dad both have centerconsole Fountains. We're planning a trip up to Charlevoix in August.

I was just telling Ian about your earlier post, he said he saw your boat being repowered at Lenny's, he is doing some work for us as well.

We are still boating with the "puppies", who are now both past 10 yrs of age, they don't seem to like it as much, but then the don't get much say, we go.......they go.

We have a big trip planned in July, starting over the 4th in MI City Indiana for War Party, a poker run with an APACHE theme and Bobby Saccenti. This is organized by COPS, we will then head over to Chicago for a day or two and then up No for several stops in WI, finished by a trip to Grand Haven to watch Smoke in the Water, and then back to pick up the trailer in SO Haven.

We will most likely be doing something in Aug around Charlevoix, Mackinaw, or Petosky. Will you be traveling all the way by water, or cheating like we do. All this boat talk, I can't wait for summer...........

Welcome to the site! With the water levels being up and the insta-family here at LSCN, it's gonna be a great summer!

There is no spell-checker built into the forum software, but you can download one that will work anytime you type something up in a web page. You'll be able to spell check your posts by right clicking on them.

Download iespell here.

Donna, I put together a few of the fun runs last year and we had typically 8-12 boats with the last run having 6 because 3 of us had break downs. I tried to get an offshore club going a couple years ago, but came to the conclusion we are a bunch of free spirited, beer guzzling ******** that just can't be organized to that degree. I have a feeling this years fun runs are going to get bigger than last year and we will see more boats participate. I will post them on this website, speedwake.com, and boatfreaks.org. Millennyummarine.com will have the schedule of poker runs for the summer posted. There are 4 Wednesday poker runs thru the summer and they run a $100 per person in the boat. Looking forward to meeting you out there this summer. Dawn and I are running a 96 32 Sunsation with a red stripe down the side.

Aggr..... Thanks for your reply I will watch for the fun runs, mid days are hard for us we save our vacations days for long weekends away.
I just found out that the Metro Beach Poker run at the end of August has been canceled.
I still wish we could put together a club like the COPS group in Chicago, they plan events and a lot of boats turn out.
See ya

Hi Donna,
Tom and have been talking a lot about (dis)orginizing some runs this coming summer.

The bottom line that we both seem to agree upon, is that we all simply want to run together with a group of fellow offshore's. We have concluded that most people don't really care too much about the: prizes, steak dinners, live entertainment, etc... we all simply want to run together. Also, nobody is too found of some of the entry fee's associated with Poker Runs these days.

I think the reason COPS is so successful is that they encompass everything positive about poker runs (riding with all your friends) and strip away the bullschit. It would be nice to have 40 - 50 boats all come together for one big fun run, but I don't think anyone really wants to handle the logistics of all this. I think that's why we are trying to keep things as informal as possible.

Heck, I've already got one job that I procrastinate at... not sure I would want to take another one on.

With that said, I'm thinking about getting an "e-mail list" together of anyone that would ever be interested in making a run. A message would be sent out a few days before the weekend explaining where we would like to run to (City of St. Clair, Wyandotte, Port Huron, etc.) Judging on the responses, Tom and I would determine what type of reservations / warnings we would need to give "said" establishment. with this type of system, we should be able to get a good turnout and nobody is committed to anything.

The only thing Tom and I have mentioned that would possibly require a few bucks, is the rental of a helicopter for one of the runs to take some photos. Again, this is still a pipe dream.

Keep you eyes open around here in the next few weeks. I'll start asking for people's e-mail address's who are interested in joining for the runs. If you want to get a head start, feel free to drop me a line at: andrew.bayley(at)gm.com

sounds good my email address is [email protected]
For the record I hate the high entry fees of poker runs and could care less about the prizes or the goodie bags. I do however enjoy the social interaction that you can only get if we are docked together for lunch, dinner or even just a bring your own barbeque at metro or one of the marina's.

What could be fun is to organize something early in the season that ends with dinner somewhere like Jacks, this will put everyone in the mood and give the boaters that don't know each other a chance to meet early in the summer. Plus if the weather sucks or someones boat is not ready we could still show up by car.

With some advance notice we would participate in a few runs. A problem I see is finding dockage at places like Jacks, Browns, JB etc. With the regular traffic on weekends there is little if any available space to bring in a bunch of boats at one time.
The back wells at Metro are probably better than most other places on the lake for a flock of boats.
I'd like to offer to help with any runs also. PM me as needed.

LSCN has a lot of clout with most locations.
A quick phone call in advance should hold a number of wells fairly easily.
