Bomb squads called to two Macomb credit unions
BY TAMMY STABLES BATTAGLIA • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • August 11, 2009
Bomb squad personnel are responding to two suspicious packages left outside credit unions in Eastpointe and Warren today, one with death threats against police officers scrawled across the outside.
Warren Police evacuated between 50 and 60 people from Peoples Trust Credit Union, 30800 Van ****, just south of 13 Mile, after someone spotted the package just after 10 a.m. today, Commissioner William Dwyer said.
"A death threat against police officers was left there, and let's leave it at that," Dwyer said about the writing on the package. They also evacuated the Fifth-Third Bank next door, he added. "We're using all the precautions necessary, if it is in fact some sort of explosive device."
The Michigan State Police Bomb squad was expected to arrive at about noon to handle the package, he said.
But just after 11 a.m., officials at the Michigan First Credit Union at Gratiot Avenue and Toepfer called police in Eastpointe to report a suspicious briefcase-type bag left conspicuously outside, Lt. Dave Gerlach said. Eastpointe Police evacuated the area and are also waiting for the bomb squad to respond, he said. There was no writing on the outside of that package, he said.
"It's the same institution, so that's why we're treating it the way it is," he said. "The bank wants us to take care of it, so we will."
