Mini,

I have to hand it to you. I'm glad you convinced me to go crappie/bluegill fishin'. I didn't need a whole lot of arm twistin' after I saw the stiff south wind. And you were almost exactly right. There were 19 'gills in the livewell. All were between 8"-11". It was great fun. Let's do it again soon.

I have to also mention that I didn't have an ultralight panfish rod in the boat. Fortunately, Mini brought two of his special All Star rods so I could have some fun, too. Those big 'gills put up a heck of a scrap on ultralight gear. We also caught a few crappies that Mini called too small, but were between 8"-10". Those went back in the water, as did a number of 'gills.

One friendly disagreement that we had was that I prefer the taste and texture of 'gills over crappie- anytime of the year. Mini seems to prefer crappie, expecially from cold water and won't eat 'gills from water that is over approximately 51 degrees (the water temp. today). I really don't care for crappie. I've tried them several times including those I caught while ice fishing and they always seemed mushy. Perch and bluegills are always very firm when fresh.

That leads to a little poll, I guess.

What LSC fish do you all enjoy eating the most? How about the top three?

My three are;
1) perch
2) bluegill
3) walleye

That list actually differs from what I would like to actually catch for the table. Since walleye provide much more meat for a lot less trouble (to fillet), I would rather catch a limit of walleye than 'gills. I still would rather catch ten or twenty jumbo (10"+) perch though. I just like perch that much better.

What about the rest of you?

1. Perch through the ice (nothin' better)
2. Bluegill through the ice
3. Perch the rest of the year
4. Walleye anytime
I mentioned my fourth choice in this catagory simpley because I've been a member of a walleye fishing club for 16 years.

Bluegill the best. Toss up between Walleye and Perch (same family). I'd rather eat Pike than Crappie they are to mushy for me. My choice. OK? Bob

went to that marina that we fished a few years back on the way home from perch fishing. well not much to be had(was noon). perch and a few gills in an hour of fishing. Water dirty and really weedy(not seen that in past).

You fish it lately? and let me know if you want to try again

All through the ice

1. Bluegill
2. Perch
3. Walleye

John;

What are the crappie doing over there ...suspended around bait or holding on weedclumps...etc. We are only starting to get a few over here(east shore) coming in
the cuts after schools of bait. The gills are doing nothing ...there's no big bulls showing up yet just tons of little guys. Thanks or the advice.

Figures...lol

Are you in school? If not call my cell ( I will PM the number to you).

I am seeing the same thing in those canals. BUT I did see an 18" crappie too, spooked with the cast. I think the fish are there, just harder to catch in the thick stuff. The water was clear (2 ft vis.) when I was there on Sunday. We didnt stay long...
