Anyone ever take their personal boat through the Soo Locks? If so, what size boat and how did you like it? What was it like? We are considering doing it this summer (we may trailer to Mackinaw) with our 270 or 340 and are looking for input.

This is the email I received from the Soo Locks web site this morning:

Jim:

Any vessel can go through the locks at no charge. For more information and the details of "locking through", you should call the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Marys Falls Canal, 906.632.3311. Enjoy your trip.

Jim,

I've been through on the big boats... So I can give ya a few of the basics. and run the Welland and Erie on 45 footers and up...so.

Your rise up to the Big Lake is about 21 ft.... I would have
at least 3 oversized fenders (12" dia. min.) ready to go out on what ever wall they put u on. Personally I would have to (2) 50' ft. (min.) lock lines ready to go.

The current in the St. Mary's is = to the St. Clair River. but one hell of alot of places where the water is dispersed mighty thin so do your home work.

Good luck, take your time its a beautiful River run

Enjoy
