If I give my current employer, say 3 weeks notice and he tells me something like, "Well I don't need you to stay, you can leave now". Does that qualify me for unemployment? Technically I'm not done working yet.

Can anyone help me on this?

That's not a problem. Done. The problem is do I sit around on unemployment for 4 weeks or do I sweat it out 'cause I'm not bringing in any dough?

This is all hypothetical, by the way. It hasn't happened.... yet (tomorrow. shhhh

I do not think you would qualify for unemploymnet since you were quitting your current job anyway. You might want to check on the web site. I believe it is michigan.gov

i think they will tell you to pack up and go home.
one week notice should be enough, are you planning
on working there again? is it important not to burn
this bridge??

Thanks Loud!! I'm not getting too happy till I get the green light tomorrow morning from the new gig, just in case (you never know what could happen by then). But it's basically official, start date of 08-11-03!

Pinemartin, I don't want to burn this bridge because they could be a potential customer at my new gig. If it has to burn because of their attitude, so be it, but I'd rather it not be by my doing.

You can collect. I did. On my last job when I turned in my 2 week notice they walked out of the door. I went right to unenjoyment and told them what happened. They told me that technically I got fired. So I got a 2 week paid vacation. This was 3 years ago, but I don't think it would be any different. Hope this helps. Good luck on your new gig and enjoy your PAID time off.

Mister D, thanx for the info. That's the way it seems like it should be. Hasn't happened yet, though, tomorrow morning I break the news. So I may start a four week vacation tomorrow afternoon.

Just leave the message board up on your monitor and let them fire you. Then you can get unemployment.

It sounds funny, but I'd be tempted to do something like that. However, as i said, I'd rather not burn this bridge.

Well, if you're concerned that they will just say "bye-bye" if you give a 2-3 weeks notice, it doesn't sound like there is much of a bridge to burn.

Just leave porn up on your computer.

just spoke to someone i know in hr, she said that alot of companies will pay you through the 2 or 3 week notice, and if they do pay you, then no you cant collect. but if they ask you to leave and dont pay you, than you can apply, and in most cases collect. but to increase your odds to make sure you can collect, sit at your desk, and in a rocking motion, sing "i'm henry the 8th i am" over and over and over again.

I've wondered the same thing because I've seen in a few instances where people turn in their notice and they are told that that day can be their last day. I would think you would be able to collect.
My luck when I turn in my 2 week notice, they'll ask me to stay 2 months while they take their sweet ole time finding a replacement then want me to train them. <_<
