Actually it was a battery explosion on a golf cart last week while on vacation. But the cause/effect is the same for batteries in boat.
I was sitting in the golf cart and stepped on the gas which engages the engine starter and KA-BOOOOM ! It sounded like a shotgun was fired. At first I thought the engine backfired. Once I raised the hood the only thing left from the battery was the bottom of the case. sides, top and cells were blown to pieces.
This is caused by the battery gasing and those gasses venting into the engine compartment. The gasses are ignited visa the engines ignition.
So check your batteries occasionally for proper fluid levels as they do boil out over a seasons use and the lower the fluid level the more gasses available to vent and exploded.
