I have never owned a fish finder but am cosidering buying one. Any info as to what make,model etc. would be helpful. Is the pixel # as importent as the ads lead us to beleave? I have about $300 to spend

I just bought a Sci-Tex Profisher III. Color screen. So far so good. I have only been out once with it and it seems to be working well.

The amount of vertical pixels is the important number. The more you have the better target separation you have. The higher you zoom in, it goes up even more.

Look at Lowrance/Eagle products, they have plenty of really good products in your price range. I think the Eagle Fish Easy series would suit you well.
