Gun laws on the lake?

Given that there's not many places to just go and shoot anymore, i'm wondering what the laws are on the lake.

Can i take my shotgun out and shoot clay pigeons from the boat in the lake? What about at gull island (when it's deserted, obviously)?

What about pistols? I was at gull island yesterday, and thought it would be sweet to bring out some targets and do some shooting toward the woods. Stand on a picnic table or something so there's a downward trajectory, and of course pick up all the brass. DNR might have a cow though because of the lead, i suppose. And it's probably not a good idea to shoot pistols from the boat.

I'm just wondering what's the law on this stuff.

I dont know about anything you just said, i think you should keep your guns at home untill you get a good answer, try to check out the MDNR site or something, otherwise i have no idea.
Shooting on Gull, deserted or not i bet will get you in big trouble, same goes for pigeons out on the lake...

"At all times, rifles, shotguns, muzzleloading and other firearms and bows and arrows carried in or on any type of motor vehicle, including ORVs and snowmobiles, must be unloaded in both barrel and magazine, and either enclosed in a case, or unstrung, or carried in the trunk of a vehicle with a trunk. These rules apply whether your vehicle is parked, stopped, moving or is on private or public property. A firearm transported in a motor-propelled boat or sailboat must be unloaded in both barrel and magazine when the motor is operating or the boat is under sail and may not be loaded until the momentum of the boat has ceased. Exception: These rules do not apply to pistols carried under authority of a concealed pistol license or properly carried under authority of a specific exception from the requirement of a concealed pistol license."
i just called a Marine Div. Lt i know to get the details. when i hear back i'll post the results... though i bet it will be "if they see ya, your gonna get arrested" the lake AND Gull are public places and it wouldnt be smart to shot on either one.

lets wait and see what the boys say...
Well they're gonna stay at home until i find out.

I do have a CCW though, so i can carry them loaded on the boat if i like. But i don't think there are too many pirates on lake st. clair, so i don't bother.

I know people take shotguns out on boats during duck hunting season, so i thought hey, maybe i can shoot some clays off the back of the boat.

Gull island is a public place, but there is plenty of public land open to hunting and shooting in this state. Just not much in this area. Although i'm sure if i showed up with a gun and started plinking, people would freak out, so it would have to be this time of year or in the fall, when it's deserted most of the time.

Still, it would be fun to take the .22 or even the .38 out there and shoot at some paper targets. Not a good place to shoot bottles or cans though.
oops, double post

oh, and the way that law up there is written it sounds like drifting and shooting clays isn't prohibited. Although there could very well be another law against it.
I brought this up before, illegal, illegal, illegal is what the officer told me. Any shot used near or over water must not be lead. The officer also stated that pigeons would be considered litter, broken or not.
Gull island is not public hunting grounds, so no firearms what so ever are allowed. Now, I am one of those guys that brings the shotgun for droppen a few unlucky ducks, during the season, but the before mentioned post stands true to that too.

He is right. I was in on the last discussion and posted this question on a different web site. If they choose to enforce it clays are considered littering. Even the biodegradeable ones.
At the Old Club they have a trap set-up to shoot over the bay, I have shot there. Steel shot is used and the clays fall in the water. I have a cottage on the North Clannel, I spoke with Clay Township and they responded by saying I could shoot off the island provided I used steel shot.
Not sure where you live but most of the state ranges have an area for skeet or clays.
As far as pistols go even private gun clubs like Linden Sportsmen clubs have IDPA shoots open to the public.
You don't need to be a member of the club or IDPA to shoot. LIvingston Sprotsmens Club has them also.
My wife and I go to Linden on Wednesday nights. That is the IDPA practice nights. For 5 bucks a person you can shoot from 6pm til just before dark. Much cheaper than any indoor range I have ever gone to. Also Multiple target engagment, shooting on the move speed and tactical reloads, are a lot more fun (my opinion) than going to indoor ranges that do not allow rapid fire, (one shot per second usually) drawing from holsters, speed loading etc.. standing in front of one target trying to hit bullseye all night is boring, unpractical and not tactically sound.
Again this is all just my opinion and what I enjoy. Im not sure what you are into.
If this sounds fun check the IDPA website. they list clubs that hold events.
No I am not an IDPA member try to sell it. It is just somthing I enjoy and for the most part the scenarios are tacticaly sound.
