The St. Johns Marsh has and continues to receive Federal Funding, set aside to maintain its state of un-development. Matching project funds are set aside both by State and Federal programs for funds raised by Waterfowl USA, Ducks Unlimited and other interests focused on further wetland development . It is highly regarded as a showcase estuary by the Department of Federal Wildlife and a model for other states interested in protecting and developing refuges. With the rapid loss of wetlands across the country, that kind of makes it a sacred plot of marsh and highly unlikely for any kind of human development. A project is now underway to add lift pumps to maintain higher water level for breeding waterfowl and species that benefit by the march. Because of the strong foothold of visionary conservationists like folks such as Ray Trombly who the marsh is dedicated after the rumor has very little chance of turning to that direction. This is a well established wetland that will continue to receive a huge amount of protection from government.
I don't believe either will happen. When they first proposed the bridge to Harsens Island alot of residents and boaters went to the meetings and protested . One of the reasons was that Sail boats would not be able to get under the bridge. Another was the added traffic on Harsens Island. As for the Marsh years ago there used to be a golf course where the marsh is.
The colony light house, actually is a water tower that was built to supply water to the homes in the colony sub.[I don't know if they called them subs back then or not] The Marsh is actually Federally protected though.

I don't mean to bring this up on the wrong board or to fester anyones feelings about this. But have concerns for both of these issues. As a kid Harsens was the Mackinaw Island to me. I think to many it is the same to alot of people in this area. We have conflicting stories. I heard the same stories as afireman!
As a group do we have the power to find out such information? As a group do we even get involved? If my memory serves me correctly I think I remember sometime ago a benefit for the Old Channel lighthouses.
Just curious. If this needs to go to another board how do we move it?

garydebs don't worry about what board it's on. It's no big deal. The Lake Discussion board doesn't see much action that's all. Just trying to get the "whole" board moving. Like sailors.....There's thousands of them on the Lake but yet this board only has a few members that sail? You would think they would be all over this? Or Hunters....I know there are plenty of hunters in the group but yet no talk on the hunting board. So enjoy the board and post it anywhere you would like. Over here would get the most views anyway. A lot of people come to the Boathouse only and forget about all the great features the rest of the site offers. Like charts, links, stories and much more.
wow I'm on a roll now.
As far as the bridge goes...... I thought that they had to keep it open to naval ships in the event that the other channels were blocked or something like that? So if they do build a bridge it would have to be a high one. It's a shame to see soemthing like that turn comercial but I guess urban sprawl is going to get everything someday.....What do you do? Fight it? I know that many all of us remeber a field or two that we played in as a youngster only to be replaced by houses or a meijer or something.
Garwoods has turned into condos, uh-huh we are getting condo-paranoia going. Its true though, those fields we played in as kids seem to have disappeared into another place to shop or condos. Can't stop progress, but its hard to see all the good stuff disappearing.
Rerun, I have to disagree with you. On any given afternoon you can post a topic and within an hour or less it can be pushed to the next page and forgotten about. I 've seen it happen. Not to say that I bring up boring topics but, let's just say some people are more interested in partying and not lake discussion.
So, I say if it's about the Lake (like this thread is) put it in Lake Discussion.
Please.

When I was growing up I watch them build I-94 and 696 at that interchange. A lot of my friends had to move to make room for that. Change does happen and some of it for the good!

I used to ride my mini bike on the hills of dirt while they were building the 696 and I 94 interchange dam that seems so long ago.

I agree with you when you say it like that. Topics on this board move fast and it will be gone within a few days. Where Lake dissucions It would stick around till summer I bet. Feel free to start a new thread there about it. I don't know how or if you can move a whole thread.
My Uncle has a place on Harsen's and is very active in staying informed as to what happens on the island. The bridge is for sure happening! It was once rejected because the bridge plan did not meat certain requirements but has since been modifed and as a result and is now a sure thing. Too me Harsen's is a quaint place that is unique and only shared by few. Now the bridge will invite all types of people some wanted and some unwanted. There are a lot of Summer homes on the Island and I have some concerns about possible vandilism and theft. I like the ferry...its the only place you can go in the Winter and still get a boat ride

Now that is the scariest thing I've heard of so far. Walk over no place to up all there empty beer cans....... uggggg I hope that never happens. Ok changed my mind...........no bridge!

Well gang with the new board options on I was able to move this topic over here. That way it will not get lost on the 20th page. Over in boathouse you will find a link to this thread in case you go over there looking for it. Enjoy!
If anyone has any questions fee free to PM me and if I can't get the answer for you I'll be sure to pass it along to the real board gods!
