Pick a Pepper

If you're searching out the pepper with the most vitamin C, head toward the red hues.
Sweet red and yellow bell peppers contain almost twice as much vitamin C as green bell peppers. An ample supply of vitamin C in the diet has been credited with reducing the risk of stroke, one of the most common causes of death and disability in the United States.

RealAge Benefit: Getting 1,200 milligrams of vitamin C per day from food and supplements can make your RealAge as much as 1 year younger

Other vitamin C-rich vegetables include Brussels sprouts and broccoli. Vitamin C-rich fruits include papayas, strawberries, cantaloupe, and citrus fruit. Recent research revealed that people who had the lowest amounts of vitamin C in their diets had as much as a 30 percent greater risk of stroke compared to people with the highest intakes of vitamin C.

Strong Means Fit

Make your energy last longer by lifting weights.
Studies of people over the age of 60 revealed that strength training three times per week helped increase the amount of time the study participants were able to spend walking on a treadmill. Both high-intensity and low-intensity strength-training programs did the trick.

RealAge Benefit: Strength training can make your RealAge 1 year younger

Strength training also may help you to lose weight if you are overweight or to keep extra pounds off. Developing muscle will help your body burn more calories throughout the day, because muscle takes more energy to sustain compared to fat. Of course, keeping an eye on your calorie intake also is important to experience the potential weight-loss benefits of increased muscle mass.

Double Cuts

Cutting down on red meat might help lower your diabetes risk.
Getting too much iron from red meat may raise type 2 diabetes risk, according to recent research. Iron from other food sources does not appear to affect risk. To trim down on meat consumption, replace one red meat dish each week with dishes based on white-meat poultry, beans, tofu, fish, or other high-protein substitutions.

RealAge Benefit: Eating a low-fat diet--and eating healthful unsaturated fats when you do eat fat--can make your RealAge as much as 6 years younger

Red meat tends to be higher in saturated fat and cholesterol compared to non-animal protein sources. For optimum RealAge benefits, try to limit your intake of red meat to 1 serving per week. When you do eat red meat, use an appropriate single serving size, such as a slice of meat that is roughly the size of a deck of cards.

We've Got Spirit

If you're feeling spiritual these days, you may start feeling better about your health, too.
Taking time to nurture your spirit may be a path to better health, according to some researchers. An assessment of the health perceptions of older adults revealed that the people who reported being the most spiritual also tended to rate their health more highly compared to people who did not consider themselves to be spiritual.

RealAge Benefit: Taking care of your emotional health and well-being can make your RealAge up to 16 years younger.

Being spiritual can mean many different things to different people. People may feel spiritual when they meditate, when they contemplate the meaning of life, when they commune with nature, or when they attend services at their chosen religious institution. Find a pastime, activity, or social or religious group that encourages development of your inner life.

Medications for Older Adults

If you are over the age of 65, you may want to avoid certain over-the-counter antihistamines.
A health panel recently suggested that certain medications may not be recommended for people over 65, including the over-the-counter antihistamine Benadryl®. Older people may experience more pronounced side effects with this medication compared to younger people. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about comparable alternatives.
RealAge Cost: Taking too many medications or taking them improperly can make your RealAge as much as 4.5 years older.

Not all people react the same way to medications, so take careful note of your own reactions. Older people are more likely to have problems with side effects from drug interactions and drug overdoses. That's because they are more likely to be taking more than one medication at a time. Their bodies also tend to process medications more slowly, which may result in more pronounced side effects or longer-lasting side effects. One way to reduce problems is to start with the lowest dose recommended and increase the dose only if needed.

They had a dr on Oprah that said if women exercised 20 min 3x a week they cut their chance of heart disease by 50%.

Also, 1/2 c of broccoli a day cuts your chance of prostate cancer by 50%.

Food for thought there....

A Friendly Smile

Here's a new prescription for keeping your smile healthy: brushing, flossing, and socializing regularly.
In a recent study, people who had at least one close friend appeared to have as much as a 30 percent lower risk of periodontitis, a dental disorder that can lead to tooth loss. Researchers speculate that the connection may be due to the stress-reduction benefits that friends offer; stress is associated with poor oral hygiene.

RealAge Benefit: Having a good social support system of family and friends can make your RealAge up to 3.5 years younger.

With the demands of daily life, you may not always feel you have time to spare for socializing with friends or family. However, your emotional health may depend on it. Weekly chats with an old friend and occasional get-togethers with people who are close to you can help ensure that you have the support system you will need during stressful times.

All Ball

You may get your abdominal muscles in tip-top shape sooner with an exercise ball.
A study revealed the both upper and lower abdominal muscles were more active when sit-ups were done on an exercise ball, compared to when they were done on other exercise surfaces. Stabilizing yourself on an exercise ball while stretching will boost the intensity this activity, as well.

RealAge Benefit: A physical activity program that builds stamina, strength, and flexibility can make your RealAge as much as 8.1 years younger.

When you work your abdominal muscles, be sure to work your back muscles, too. Strengthening these complementary body parts at the same time can help prevent injury or strain. To strengthen back muscles, lie on your stomach with your legs outstretched and your hands placed near your shoulders, elbows bent. Slowly curl your upper body off the floor using your hands, arms, and back muscles. Lift your head first, then your shoulders, then your torso, until your arms are straight and only your hips and legs remain on the floor. Hold for two seconds, return to the floor, rest, and repeat 10 times.

Snore No More

If you not only snore but also suffer from nasal inflammation, a prescription nasal spray may solve both problems.
In a recent study, people who experienced both rhinitis -- nasal inflammation that can bring symptoms of sneezing, itching, nasal discharge, and congestion -- as well as sleep apnea reported improvements in both conditions after using a steroid nasal spray twice daily. See your healthcare provider for diagnosis if you snore and have a stuffy nose.

RealAge Benefit: Getting 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night can make your RealAge as much as 3 years younger.

Sleep apnea is a snoring condition that can put your overall health at risk. People with sleep apnea experience interrupted breathing during sleep. The condition can cause daytime drowsiness and has been associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure.

Take D for Your Joints

Getting adequate amounts of vitamin D each day may reduce your risk of a painful disease.
People with the highest vitamin D intake had the lowest risk of rheumatoid arthritis in a recent study. To get vitamin D from your diet, try vitamin D-rich fish, such as Atlantic cod, or vitamin D-fortified milk or cereals. You also can look for a supplement that contains the optimum daily dose.

RealAge Benefit: Getting 400 IU of vitamin D and 1,200 milligrams of calcium per day can make your RealAge as much as 1.3 years younger.

In addition to diet, another way to meet your vitamin D needs is to get 20 minutes of safe sunlight per day. Wear sunscreen and avoid sunlight during peak hours (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.). If you eat fish for extra vitamin D, be aware that some kinds of fish may be high in mercury, such as swordfish, shark, tilefish, king mackerel, red snapper, and orange roughy.

A Good Way to Focus

You may be able to focus better on the task at hand if you grab your walking shoes.
Improving your cardiovascular fitness through brisk walking or jogging can help boost your mental acuity. In a study, people who regularly participated in cardiovascular exercise were able to focus better on a target compared to people who performed only stretching and toning exercises.

RealAge Benefit: Doing stamina-building exercises for at least 60 minutes per week can make your RealAge as much as 6.4 years younger.

In addition to brisk walking and jogging, other ways to boost your cardiovascular fitness include swimming, biking, and climbing stairs. To be effective, cardiovascular training must increase your heart rate and boost your oxygen intake. To find out if you are working hard enough, try talking. Conversation should be more difficult when you are doing cardiovascular exercise. If you are beginning an exercise program for the first time, consult your healthcare provider.

Safer with Silver?

If you're in the market to buy a new car, silver may be the safest shade.
A New Zealand study revealed that silver cars were as much as 50% less likely to be involved in serious accidents compared to cars of other shades. Researchers are not sure why silver cars appeared to be safer, but speculate that the lighter, more reflective shade may make the cars more visible on the road.

RealAge Benefit: Taking proper precautions when driving can make your RealAge as much as 3.4 years younger.

In a New Zealand study, drivers of brown cars were most likely to be involved in crashes. Injury causing accidents were most common in green and black cars. This was true even after confounding factors, such as the road condition or the alcohol intake of the driver, were taken into account.

Think About It

Could you boost your immunity with your own brainpower? Researchers say maybe so.
A study involving mindfulness meditation revealed that the practice boosted immune system function in participants. Mindfulness meditation is the practice of becoming deeply aware of the present moment through meditation. The stress-reduction qualities of this practice may be the source of its immune-boosting powers.

RealAge Benefit: Taking care of your emotional health and well-being can make your RealAge up to 16 years younger.

For a quick start to mindfulness meditation, sit quietly for 10 to 20 minutes, clearing all thoughts from your head. Breathe deeply and evenly. Focus your eyes softly on an object or close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Note any thoughts or sensations as they occur, but then return to your original focus. Mindfulness meditation also has been called moment-to-moment non-judgmental attention.

A Good Laugh is Healthy

I thought these were so funny.

If you remember the Original Hollywood Squares and its comics, this may bring a tear to your eyes.
