When coming back from Canada your are I believe you are supposed to check in with customs and imigration if you don't have an I-68. My question is how would anyone from customs and integration ever know unless I was stopped out in the middle of the lake. If that happened all I would need to do is prove US citizenship with a birth certificate. Right or wrong?

I believe you are correct, but you could be forced into going with them to the nearest office for complete processing. It is on your part to prove you where only in the middle of the lake and not over on Canadian soil. Remember, even anchoring out in the lake on the Canadian side is considered landing on their soil.

As a US citizen it is not mandatory that you get and I-68. You just need to check in every time you come back over (to keep it on the up and up) The way I look at it, $32.00 for the entire family is not too bad to avoid the hassle if you are stopped.

You might also want to check out the following thread on I-68's.
