for years, i've seen the "TIPS" jar at the end of the car wash as well as sitting next to the cash registar at Baskin Robbins and some food places.

I don't understand the reason for tipping as long as their position is to serve customers and their job pays at least minimum wage.

I never want to roll down my nice, clean window and have it get water streaks just to tip them. <_<

Tipping now a days is ridiculous! I understand the wait staff because they make less than minimum wage. Same with your hair dresser that usually gives a good percentage of the fee to the owner of the salon. Why everyone else? Are you not paid to do your job? The ice cream man? Next it'll be the person that bags your food at the drive thru or the grocery store. UGH Thanks for letting me vent!

I don't mean to be the one who begs to differ, but I used to work at a car wash and trust me they DON'T make much money. I was making a measly $5.00/hr. as a manager. Perhaps I was young and stupid. I always give'em at least a buck or two at the front where you pay for the wash. They often do a much better job like wiping your door jams, brushing off that spot in the back the automatic wash never gets, cleaning behind you pushbar, etc. At a ice cream shopI will not unless they're delivering it to me.

I do if it’s a place where they wipe it down after it’s been though the wash... That and I tip when I call in carry out from restaurants such as Elias brothers or Denny’s when I go in to pick it up...

I don't tip everyone. The women who delivers our newspaper leaves a self addressed envelope in my mailbox once a month <_< Some times I'll tip the car wash guys, half the time they still do a poopie job. Ice cream place? They don't do anything more than someone who works at McDonalds, I don't understand having to tip them. When I get my hair/nails done, always. And of course servers at restaurants.

I always tip the car wash dudes.

Negative on the ice cream

Negative on the coffee

Negative on carryout most of the times~unless it's obvious the waitress put some time into packing the bag. Which typically isn't the case when I order just a sandwich or something.

Tip on Pizza only if it's delivered

ALWAYS tip on drinks... always always. Feel embarrassed when people throw a quarter out there for a tip. I've even snuck extra tipage out there sometimes.

No way! I rarely get carry-out, but I would not tip for picking up my own order!

Car wash - I never use the drive through ones, but the times I did, I didn't leave a tip. Maybe if I was a regular, and I knew the leel of service would be reflective on my tip, I might.

Ice-cream shop or coffee shop, rarely tip. Not unless I'm asking for something super specific, and I don't. All they do is their job. They scoop the ice cream, and play cashier.

Waiters and waitresses on the other hand, are on your beck and call. They take your order, bring your food out while it's still hot, top off your drinks, etc., etc.. Sure it's "their job" -- but they can go out of their way to make you feel like royalty, or they can do it half-assed. That's what the tip should reflect.

Also, I don't have a problem with suggested tip rates, but including gratuity (ususally for larger parties) is wrong, IMHO!

You can crack your door open - that's what i do. I always tip the guys who dry your car - that job sucks, especially in the winter, and i'm sure they don't make that much. But hardly ever coffee or ice cream people unless they went out of their way somehow.
