I would celebrate it!

It is technically a Hallmark holiday though.
a few years back I was in South Carolina w/ my X and it was sweetest day at home and they had no idea what it was in SC.

I agree!! Michael and I have always celebrated. Nothing extravagant though, we just get each other cute things we know the other likes. For instance he knows I LOVE Jelly Bellies.... Yum I can not wait for Saturday!!!

Hey anybody got any good ideas?

Hallmark $$$ making day is all it is. Dont' celebrate, if I want flowers or anything else I will buy it myself. Doesn't have to be a hallmark holiday to be extra nice to someone.

Girlfriends from the past have always told me not to worry about it because it is a hallmar4k holiday, but if I actually do not worry about it, it all of a sudden becomes much more. We'll see about Saturday.

OMG I was totally thinking of this very same thing today! I was thinking what a crock a $hit that they put this crap out there for people to remember they care about someone!! I think it's ridiculous and just a way to make money and my friends in Virginia never even heard of the holiday so it's a local thing I gather...........Anyways, I think every day should be a sweetest day/ Valentines day WHAAAATEVER it's never too late, too soon, too early to show someone you care no matter what day it is......ugghh!! my 02.

Have you've hugged someone today!!

No

Thought I'd post a little history of this dump of a holiday.

Observed the 3rd Saturday in the month of October, Sweetest Day observance originated in Cleveland in 1922. Herbert Birch Kingston, a philanthropist and candy company employee wanted to bring happiness into the lives of orphans, shut-ins and others who were forgotten. With the help of friends, he began to distribute candy and small gifts to the underprivileged.

On the first Sweetest Day, movie star Ann Pennington presented 2,200 Cleveland newspaper boys with boxes of candy to express gratitude for their service to the public.
Another popular movie star, Theda Bara, distributed 10,000 boxes of candy to people in Cleveland hospitals and also gave candy to all who came to watch her film in a local theater.

Primarily a regional observance celebrated in the Great Lakes region and the Northeast, Sweetest Day is gradually spreading to other areas of the country. People tend to take the Sweetest Day tradition with them when they move. Ohio is the top state for Sweetest Day sales, followed by Michigan and Illinois. Texas, California and Florida are among the top 10 states in sales.

Over the years, Sweetest Day has evolved into a time to express romantic love and also to show appreciation to friends.

Rerun thanks for the explanation! What would we do w/o the Internet for ontime info..!! I still think it's a crock!!
Not that I read the whole thing I barely made it through the first line! But if there's something to be written there must be a reason!

Peeps have so much anger about a day that is supposed to promote kindness....

I figure if you do not like what the day stands for, it is your choice to not celebrate.

(I am not referring to specific comments on the board) I have heard people at school out and about etc. that have some major animosity about this day, what gives?

Do you think they are HALLMARk haters?

Ok so it IS a 'Hallmark holiday'. A common answer is, "I show I care everyday" but.... do you? When is the last time you did something special for someone you love just because? (and I am not criticizing, just some thoughts to ponder)

I think that sweetest day is a hallmark holiday but I do atleast acknowledge it. Usually I just get him a little something and he buys me something little in return or gives me flowers. I really think it's just another day to buy presents. I would rather him show his love on a day that it is unexpected!

I'm just throwing out hostility when really I could care less either way (it's the wine, I tell ya)
.... and you're right people don't show they care everyday but today i went shopping bought Big Tree some really cool shirts at reaaaaaally reasonable prices and I even cooked dinner which I haven't done in a reeeeeeeeally long time. But really I personally try to do whatever is thoughtful and caring everyday, it's really hard to quantify?.

I wonder if they could have a GNO (Girls night out holiday) When all the men in the world could cater to us women for a day!! Now wouldn't that be niiiiiice!!
