Ok, this is going to sound dumb, but one of the guys here at work just asked me what the equivalent is between a mile and a knot. He's been told his boat does 27 knots/hour at full speed. Help! I haven't the slightest.

1 knot is equal to 1.15078 mph. So 27 knots is approximately 31 mph. I am not really that smart, but I have a conversion chart on my computer.

Convincor,
I just sent it. It may not go throught the firewall here at work. It is an exe. file and GM usually strips them down before they go out. Let me know, if not, I will have to grab it on disk.

In case anyone was curious, I learned this in a Coast Guard class I took. The reason behind a nautical mile is for navigation purposes and was calculated like this:

There are 360 degrees in a circle. Each circle has 360 degrees X 60, or 21,600 minutes. The distance covered by one minute on a circle is one nautical mile. It is 21,600 minutes, or 21,600 nautical miles around the earth at the equator. A knot is a speed of 1 nautical mile per hour.

For the conversion, a statute mile is 5280 feet and a nautical mile is 6,067 feet. The 6,067 feet come from 1/21,600 of the distance around the earth at the equator.

6067/5280 = 1.15

5280/6067 = 0.87

- If you want to convert knots to mph, just multiply the knots by 1.15
- If you want to convert mph to knots, just multiply the mph by 0.87
