Looming ice invokes fears
Giant chunk sitting north of river sparks memories of 1984

A massive ice bridge in Lake Huron just north of the Blue Water Bridge has U.S. and Canadian Coast Guard officials concerned about what might happen if the weather quickly warms this weekend.

The concern is the bridge might break into chunks too big to flow smoothly along the St. Clair River.

"There is the potential, if it breaks off in large plates, that those plates could be wider than the narrow parts of the river," said Erin Clark, ice specialist for Environment Canada, which works with the Coast Guard.

Mark Stauffer, a chief warrant officer with the U.S. Coast Guard, said that could cause massive flooding and damage to docks -- something the Blue Water Area hasn't seen in nearly three decades.

Are the A10s at Selfridge? Maybe drop some paint targets on the ice then go out for target practice. Accomplishes three things:
- gives the pilots practice
- breaks up the ice
- gets the canucks all hot and bothered

Just a thought.

Yes they are. But why use paint when you can use napalm?

What is described in the Times Herald is very much the truth. Although the ice bridge develops every year this version is bigger in area size and appears thicker than usual. Hopefully the rain expected Sunday and continued warming temperatures will take care of this before it causes low water levels and dock damage towards LSC.

Good idea. That would be sure to annoy even more people, while allowing fishermen to catch broiled fish. Even more winners.
