Hi iamfish,
We used to fish there a bit, but I used to fish on the dock every week up in Port Sanilac. We never casted any lures from the dock except spoons and Ping-a Tees for Salmon and Trout. We used to throw out worms on a hook, and shrimp and chicken livers. We caught Salmon and Lake Trout on the lures, but the Salmon were in early spring, or fall. On occassion we would get a Skamania in July when they were in the area, very seldom though. I usually caught the Salmon casting, but saw Lakers caught right next to me. I never got a Laker.
Summer months putting out worms you can get big Catfish, Perch, Sheephead, Smelt, Bass, Carp. We usually fished lazy, pole sitting with a bell on it, rather than casting. We would get there after 6 pm and hang out until 1-2 am and then head back to our camp at Forester park just North of Port Sanilac, or if we fished Lexington, we would stay by a campground South of them, can't remember if it was COA or what.
If you plan on camping up there, call around first, don't know what's open. I heard Forester park doesn't allow overnight camping anymore. Night fishing up there with a few friends, a few beers, a few subs, and a coleman lantern is a good time.
One noteable mention, I go up to Tawas City a lot now, and everytime up we at least get out one night and cast for Walleyes off the pier there. Almost always get an eye or a few. Might take one, two or three of us a few hours casting, but we do ok in our opinion. Seems like the hot time is from about 10:30 pm to 2 am, seems like after 2 we are tired, and the fish don't bite as good? We use Rapalas, and Shad Raps.
Hope this helps. Welcome to the site.
Good Luck, Propwash
