I've read a lot about the frustration trying to catch the Muskie in the lake. I've had a slow year so far catching only 11 fish less all than 35", that is, until Tuesday. Wanted to share so others can keep trying and find some luck.
Location: 1/2 mile west of weather bouy - troll south, good water for 4 miles till hit humps.
Weather: 5pm, hot and calm clear sky, falling barometer, then strong north east wind developed. Muskie jumping all over the place, spashing on surface.
Water color silt green.
Rods in at 5pm.
Trolled south running tight at 4-4.5mph with no hits, marking lots fish. Turned around and ran north for another trolling run. Wind started to pick up. Ran lines longer with slower speed.
6:50, 46" on Believer wb dark green frog, boat rod, 40', 2oz, 4mph. Fat fish. Great shape. Two strong runs when got close to boat. Released to fight again.
7:15, 28" on wb walleye pattern, 30', 2oz, 3.8mph.
9:05, ??? huge hit. wb pink lady, 30', 2oz, 3.5mph. Heavy fish felt bigger than first. Stayed down, then came to surface fast and did head shake and back down. Swam toward boat, broke water again and threw hook. Big fish! Looked like an aligator splashing.
Ran boat back to same location Wed, in 25mph north wind, 3-5' rollers. 0-0 running for 4hrs.
Remember if you cannot get a fish revived, torpedo it straight down into the colder deeper water. I've seen a lot of dead muskie floating this year. Unless you hug them for a five minute photo shoot, you'll be okay by getting them down into the cold water for them to fight again.
