Has anyone had any interactions with Boarder Patrol or Immigrations since the new June 1 inititatives? Heard it may get a bit more strick and regualted this year. Have not been to Canada yet this year, waiting for good weather and I-68. Just wondering what we can expect.

if everyone on board has a standard passport do you need something additional to enter and return by boat from Canada. On another thread someone said something about a sicker if your boat is longer than 30'. If anyone can post a link to a web site listing all the requirements to travel there by pleasure boat I would appreciate it. Thanks

Legeally everyone on board needs an I-68 or a Nexus card in order to return to the U.S. and check into U.S. customs by phone. Otherwise you would have to report, in person, to a customs check point to return to the U.S.

I'll repeat, again, what the border patrol agent told us in class:

You need an I-68 or Nexus to return to the US. But, in his words, if you do not have those and you (the Captain of the boat) do call in from a landline as soon as you return (and noone gets off the boat except you) - the chances of them coming out to inspect are zero.

They figure if you are calling in chances are you are legal so they do not bother.

Yes, nothing like a consistent story. I was given an instruction sheet for checking into the U.S. when traveling by boat by the U.S. and Canadian customs agents who did my Nexus interview.

Wonder how many versions of that are kicking around.

For land crossings yes. They don't work for water crossing.

The information we received from the Border patrol when we renewed our NEXUS cards is consistent with Stodge's comments. We were also told that they moved a bunch of agents to Selfridge and not to be surprised if agents show up at the marina to verify the check-in number they give you when you check in with NEXUS. They said they plan on "raising their visibility" significantly beginning this year with the new resources at Selfridge....

it's there own fault that people can't figure this out, the info on the power squardron site is old, and even on the Canadian site you have to hunt for it,
and they also keep all the old info up, and the old stuff lists first. I am glad
I read about this since I just assumed a US passport was OK.

Where do you get the I68 So will I need to get something from the US and something differnt from Canada. I know I could search for this stuff, I was
just hoping that some of you might know the best and latest info since you may have done it yourself recently. Thank you for the information, I really appreciate it.

You don't need something from the US and something different from canada.

An I-68 or Nexus either one will suffice.

I think you can get an I-68 at Algonac.

For a Nexus it is a longer process. You have to apply, then you have to go to the customs office in Pt Huron or Detroit for an interview with both the US and Canada. The Nexus is good for 5 years.

The user fee decal is required to bring the boat back into the U.S. (and they will ask for the decal number) for any vessel more than 30' in length. The I-68 and NEXUS are to bring the "people" back and everyone on board must have one if you want to be able to call back in via phone. The user fee decal must be renewed annually. Search the net for vessel user fee decals and you should get the link (I don't know how to link it here).

a passport or enhanced drivers license is required for all land or water crossings starting this month, just not sure if you also have to have an I68 or not, but yes the enhance license is good for water crossings.

That is what we were told also, the enhanced drivers license is good for land and water crossing.

I could be wrong though.
Or when traveling to Mexico and a couple other sea venturing countries (can't remenber them) by cruise ship. That is where it gets confusing, NOT pleasure craft.

well it's good for Mexico and the Caribbean, the last I heard there no bridge or tunnel to get there.

Enhanced Driver's License and State ID card

Beginning June 1, travelers returning to the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean must have a passport, passport card or other federally approved document to enter the country. This requirement is part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), which was enacted to heighten border security.

RIGHT... I'll say this... At least Island time offered a dis-claimer @ the end of his post...

I don't know what you are talking about but here is the info I was looking for

Land/Sea Travel
Beginning June 1, 2009

U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry are required to have documents that comply with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), most commonly a U.S. passport, a passport card, a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST, or an enhanced driver's license. See the complete list of WHTI-compliant documents.

Your marina is not an approved land port of entry (there's two here on the lake that I know of) without the NEXUS OR I-68 and them have been explained quite well here in the past including fines up to $5000 and forfeture of boat

Fitsus.... Your digging a hole... All you had to say was yes... The enhanced license is supposed to work the same as the nexus cards but "NO" you have to argue & make excuses.... Sometimes admitting your wrong is easier then argueing foolishly & making excuses to deflect from the facts.....

I have to agree with this also

Seems to be the case.

Before the Agent made the "off the record" comments I stated earlier in this thread, he did say you could come back to the US without an I-68 IF you go to the Detroit or PH crossing.
