I would recommend you take a USCG Auxiliary or US Power Squadron boating course. In the meantime "Chapman's Boating, Seamanship and Small Boat Handling" has a good chapter on navigation. And for calculating your course remember "T"rue "V"irgins "M"ake "D"ull "C"ompanions.
