Yep, that's the way it was done when I was in junior high in Hazel Park in 1961. The reason given was that guys wouldn't take the time to properly care for a swimsuit and it would be all moldy and mildew covered in no time, while the girls knew better.
The girls' class came out a different door into the same pool area we used (only one pool, of course) the next period after us, but somehow the classes were staggered in such a way that our coach got us out and while we were in the locker room showering and dressing to go to our next class, the girls were in the pool. The doors to the pool locked from the outside pool area but not from the inside. So it wasn't too unexpected when finally a bunch of tough characters took my friend Pete right out of the shower buck naked and bodily hauled him back into the pool area and threw him in before retreating back to the locker room and leaving him stranded, naked and pulling on the locked door. There was some discipline handed out but I think everyone involved thought it was worth it, except Pete of course. I don't think he ever fully recovered from the embarrassment!
