Old ship still leads way through icy Great Lakes

The U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Mackinaw slices through ice up to 4 feet thick in Whitefish Bay, breaking it into huge floes and leaving a wide track of broken ice and open water in its wake.

Inside the 290-foot ship, the ice sliding along the steel hull makes a loud and constant rumble, like heavy surf pounding onto a beach.

I've been on board while the Mack was moored in Cheboygan ... it's pretty cool ... even tho she's older they coasties work hard to keep her as bristol as possible ...
