yeah, i went "pike" fishing on sunday. went to a small lake in oakland county that is known to have great spring "pike" fishing. the water temp was only 47* so i opted for a smithwich suspending rogue.
after several casts alone a good sized sunken island, i finally got a strike. after a short fight the fish was at the side of the boat. darn, its a bass. not a bad sized fish, if your into catching 2.5 lb bass, but it isnt bass season yet.
a few moments and casts later, still working down the submerged island, another fish took the rogue. a quick sweep of the rod tip, and few cranks of the reel and i discover another largemouth on the end of my line. this one barely 14". what was i doing wrong, here i am fishing for "pike" and all i am catching is pesky largemouth!??!?
i worked my way to the north side of the island, and made a few casts. fish on. finally, i caught a legal fish for this time of year. i powerhouse bluegill took the rogue. now, it was no "pike", but at least it wasnt a bass, right?
after about 30 minutes of fishing i had managed to convince two largeheads and one 'gill bite. but still no "pike".
in an attempt to catch at least one toothy critter, i idled over to a large flat where i knew bass staged before spawning. i worked the edge with my suspending jerkbait hopeing to catch at least a hammer handle. a few bass later, i finally hooked into "pike". thank god. the fish was 29" and very very skinny. and it took me about 3 minutes to get him unhooked and back into the water. at that, i called it a day.
