S.S. in a Boat Name

What does the S.S. stand for in boat names?
ie: S.S. Minnow
I have always wanted to know this.

Oddly, I understand it used to stand for both Steam Ship and Sailing Ship.

HMS means Her/His Majesty's Ship (British Royal Navy).

YES you are correct! I confirmed this with the Coast Guard about 10 years ago. I asked the question in a bar one night and we never really came up with the right answer ...it took me about another 2 years before I picked up the phone and called CG

so Captain Beer Jammer's vessel should have
