So the girlfriend says, "this muskie fishing is easy!"

Took my girlfriend out for her first time ever fishing. The last time I had her in the boat was the day my VMAX blew. I've since gotten her a rod and reel and her own little tackle box. So we go out and I'm just praying she sees something and doesn't hate fishing from the get-go. I get her set up with a lipless fire tiger Rapala and teach her how to cast, and I keep my fingers crossed.

We got out kinda late as she wanted to get all of her homework done before the rest of the weekend (she's a few weeks away from her MBA, so she's doing homework all the time.) so we didn't get out until after 5. I get a solid follow from a high 30's or so and she gets to see it and that's a good thing, because she knows there's fish there now. Then she's like "something's funny here.....no wait! It's a fish!" And there's a rock bass on her Rapala. We get it in the boat, and I'm relieved that she's caught a fish. She was very much the champ when she asked to hold it herself. I was very proud.

So back to fishing and about 15 minutes later, "hey, another fishy!!!!" Well that "fishy" turns out to be a friggin muskie!!!!! I've been beating this lake to a froth with flies for the last year with only a few follows, two hook ups and no boated fish to show for it, and she slimes the boat in her first 45 minutes. Good thing I love the girl, or she'd have swam back., and paid for gas. So now she thinks fishing is fun. I told her to wait until it's raining in late November to see how much fun it is.

And I was so proud of her; she only wanted to get the fish back in the water and wanted to make sure I handled it properly and that it lived. (And that's with no lecture on C&R; she just cares about the fish, so that was very cool.)

Thats a great fishing story! Very nice of you to let her boat a musky before you. You might get her addicted to muskies!!
I won't say it wasn't bittersweet. I've only been casting gear for a week, so I can be patient, but she does it in 45 minutes!!!!

kinda funny how musky fishing works. Its amzing how fast your luck can change. you know your sh*t. I see a big fish coming soon, i dont know how many times I have been pissed or frustrated only to laugh about it later
A very similar story to this is the reason my wife (then girlfriend) hasn't been smallie fishing with me in 6yrs.

Great story! Good thing you found a girl who like to fish, maybe she can give you a few pointers.
Uhm, have you tried casting a rapala?

j/k Jeff, your turn is coming, and hopefully you will boat a bigger one than my first.

My wife is the same way....always seems to out fish me and she only uses a hook & worm!

Glad to hear it worked out & she's (hopefully) becoming a fisherwoman. Great way to introduce someone new to our beloved sport!

Thanks. And I know it's a funny world muskie fishing. And I know I'm severely handicapping myself flyfishing, and that's why I've not complained about it. I can be patient, but being patient doesn't get fish in the boat and doesn't get me marking fish and learning the lake. Now with my new arsenal of gear, my confidence is up and I actually feel like I can get a LSC fish. I've caught muskie before, my parents live in MN, and I've fished Mille Lacs and other lakes up there. But I'm on a dry run here on this lake, and that's what's killing me. I need to start figuring out the St. Clair fish.
yeah I wanted to throw Storm in the lake when he said that to Muskiegirl in his post. Sure it CAN be easy when the fish are on but as you know Jeff casting can be very frusterating and difficult. Everybody knows where the fish are right now because of postings. Try going out when these fish leave and you have to go looking for them again peeps. That's half the battle is finding fish and the other half is getting them LANDED LOL. JOB WELL DONE to you and your girl.

Thanks Brian. One more reason I made the switch up to conventional. Here before too long these fish are going to be entrenched in their summer pattern and we'll have to find them all over again, and I'd rather find them on DCG's and Dawgs than on flies.
