I went down to check on my boat yesterday, and as I approached I noticed the 2 tires on the port side were low. That's odd, I thought. Maybe I ran over some nails pulling it in. They're only about half flat, but still too flat to tow it as-is. Walked around to the other side, one of those is the same way. Weird. No biggie though, I figured i'd get 'em patched up or something and be on my way.

So I go to uncover it to grab something out of the cockpit, and as I start to uncover it, I notice a new scratch above the rubrail on the starboard side. Not a normal scratch from a bumper or a dock, a wavy, uneven scratch. So I started to follow it, and it kept going. All the way to the back of the boat. Then there's another one on the transom, on both sides. Then more on the starboard side. Above and below the rubrail. Come back over to the port side and I notice more near the front of the boat, all the way down the side below the rubrail. Someone keyed my boat! What the hell? There's also white powder dumped on the starboard side above the rubrail, don't know what it is. Doesn't look like the boat next to me was sanding or anything.

I called the owner of the storage yard and let him know, then I called the cops and waited an hour for them to come and take a report. Obviously there's no way to catch anyone but I wanted a report anyway.

The boat needs a new windshield, canvas, and upholstery. Did they mess with that? No. They messed with my nice, shiny, freshly waxed gelcoat. WTF. The one thing the boat DIDN'T need was paint.

And my deductible is $1000. There's so much damage surface-area wise that it'll probably cost that much to fix it. If I make an insurance claim i'm shooting to have the whole boat repainted (except the bottom maybe). There's no way they can match the gel close enough to have it look good over such a large area, and I'm damn picky about my things. People ask me all the time if the boat is new and they're surprised that it's 18 years old. Well, I guess not any more, it looks pretty sad now.

This is horrible! Who the hell would do that? Every year we hear about jackasses causing damage to boats, and the general public doesn't set to get upset because they think "Well if you can afford a boat your rich". Ahhh, so sorry to hear about this! I've been very lucky not having any harm come to my boat with the exception of the raccoon incident last year.

Thats a bummer, hopefully everything works out insurance wise for you. I dont know why people feel the need to mess with boats, mine was broken into 4 times last year.

Unbelievable.

I just saw the story on the news last night that st clair shores police have been warning boaters about theft. Apparently there is a higher than normal theft rate of radios, etc from the marinas lately.

this is terrible.

I have two notes to make though...

One are you sure you didnt have two much to drink and forget to unhook the boat prior to hitting the trail? This would explain all issues above! Seriously, we have all done this a time or two...(sarcastic joke for those of you that need this stated)

Second, a "person i know" brought his boat to a paint shop to have some work done and claimed it as damage. Well, the shop said it was not enough to make an insurance claim, the asked him to leave and bring it back in a few hours....Well he did after stopping in a back alley and went through a whole set of keys on the hull sides of a 33' offshore. He then dropped it off and two weeks later new hull sides...

Exactly! A one-way boat ride in November should do the trick!

yea I don't know what happened. I started to type and all of a sudden a screen popped up that said I can only make a post every so many seconds. So I hit back and finished typing my post. Then I had to actually do work.
