My internet connection has gotten much slower over the past few months. I have deleted all the temporary internet files, but that didn't help much. I've heard that programs end up on your computer after a while and you're not aware of them. I'd like to scan for any spyware programs, but don't have a program to do so. There are a bunch of them out there, but I don't know which ones are good. I'd like to get one that's either cheap or free, but does a good job. Any suggestions on programs or procedures that will restore the speed?

I have to go with Instigator. I use SpyBot and love it. In fact I am going to run it again, right now.

Hazy, that installs spy-ware on your computer!!! I don't use it anymore and am interested in the replies in this thread.

I think you're mistaken

I use ADAWARE and it does a good job of cleaning the whole HD of spy-ware, inlcuding the Registry!

I used ADAWARE at first myself, but started finding MUCH DEEEPER HIDDEN ad programs installed on my system! I spoke to a few friends in the BIZ & they laughed at me!
Not that I'm not USED to that or anything . . . <_<
YEP, ADAWARE is one of those programs that pretends to be helping but is actually just getting rid of the competition on your computer & installing the ads IT WANTs!

QUOTE(Dana @ Feb 17 2004, 02:20 PM)I've been running both...do I not need to?
NOPE! I tried that initially, too . . .

FIRST, do an UNINSTALL of your ADAWARE. This 'pretends' to remove it from your system, but it actually installs it's own spyware.

THEN, check your ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in your control panel. It's probably still there. If so, remove it.

THEN, run SPYBOT. It will clean out all the rest of the garbage.

Good luck!

Question when running the "Search adn Destroy" on Spybot.

All these files that it finds that are labeled (a sample cut and paste from a search I just did is below), what are these? It found 74 such files. Can I delete all of them or not? They all appear to be in the "Registry". Never really heard of them before, not sure what they do. If anything.

I know that some of the list have additional information on what they are about, but I always just delete all of them myself.

Be sure to update your software before you use it each time to make sure it has the current list of ADWARE.

Stazi, it does...it's vewwy sneaky.

Norton's found 7 hidden files on my daughters computer! I had to manually remove them.....did a spybot and found more! Her internet connection still is slow.....Not sure what else I'm going to do with it. Don't find any viruses using two different software programs. I can try to re-install windows over her system and see if that helps...if not, I may just reformat and start all over. Maybe it will teach her not to download garbage!

Also, that Wildtang is hard to get rid of. Be careful.

Go into the control panel & clear out your cookies and windows temp files, then do a defrag. That should help, too!
