Hey everybody,

I was ice fishng this weekend at selfridge and I don't know if I was in the shanty too long or if I was just dreaming of this springs salmon season but I looked in the hole and I could swear that I had a steelhead swimming back and forth through my hole. I saw it 2 or 3 times in about a 45 minute time period. Has anyone else seen one? or am I just crazy

Good luck guys! Go Get Em!

I've caught two steelies out of St. Clair. The first came on a tube out in front of Ford's cove in the fall of 99'. The second came in the St. Clair river in the summer of 01' on a jerkbait. I was in complete awe the first time it happened. Heck of a treat.

I have never personally caught a steelie anywhere south of the 45th parallel, every year I hear of a couple being caught by spring walleye fishermen. I always thought that LSC would be to warm, and doesn't move fast enough. I guess now that I think about it, why wouldn't they be in LSC, they do run in the Clinton River by Blakes Cider Mill, and also in the St. Clair River at Port Huron.

I couldn't imagine hooking a Steelhead on the piece of spaghetti I use to ice fish! They tear up my 8ft noodle rod on the Manistee!!

Heya all.. I have caught a steelie in the Clinton over by the Mill. And my friend picked up a Steelie this year over by Cotton Road! weehoo. what a treat! My buddie didnt keep his (too small), but it was kindof neat to pull something like that through the ice. When it come into the hole, it struck.. thought it was a bass until you get the silver flash.. thats when it was exciting.. what a bonus treat since we wherent seeing much perch.
later!

I never believed they were in the lake up until a couple of years ago when I saw what looked to be about a 15 pound Steelie floating in the water just outside the Spillway. I knew it must have recently perished because it was still bright silver and dark on top. At first I thought it was a Chinook but upon closer inspection, it's pink band became visible. I couldn't believe my eyes. I might just take my 9 foot drift rod up to Blakes for a scouting mission this spring.

I was out at selfridge again today and I talked to some guys and they said that the have seen a few steelhead over the past week or so. Maybe I'll stop using wigglers and minnows an tie on some silver streaks. It would be a lot more fun fighting one of those instead of battling the mighty micro-perch that I have been catching.

Stelies aren't that rare in the lake. I have also caught Kings and Browns when pushing the season early for ice out Northerns. Look for a lot more Steel in a couple years, The Clinton received a large plant of them last year.
If you want to target them through the ice, the mouth of the Clinton and Spillway are good places, but watch the ice. Even better, take a ride up to Lexington or Port Sanilac, they will be right in the harbors.

Hey Guy's,

Caught one on a crankbait a few years ago in the fall near the mouth of the Detroit river and caught one through the ice about 12 years ago way up near St. John's marsh out from what used to be called Stan's Shanties. The one caught on a ice fishing rod was one of those cheapie's, you know which kind, the kind with no reel just a couple of pegs and line wrapped around the pegs. After what seemed like hours and fingers cut to shreads from the line burning through them I pulled her through the ice. The bad news was I really wasn't knowledgable to the rules for trout and some guy said that I had better release it before I get in trouble because he would call the DNR. That was my first catch and release of a Steelie, it sure is much easier now than it was then.

I think you guys are talking about Yate's Cider Mill not Blake's. Blake's Cider Mill is up here in Armada where I live and Yate's is on the River just east of Rochester. I have had the opportunity to catch Salmon, Steelhead and Brookie's in the river outside of Yate's. I watched them quite a few years ago dump thousands of fingerlings..........There are no more fish in the area though....so don't even waste your time fishing there. Yeah, somebody caught them all and it is a barren wasteland now. LOL

Salmonslammer,

Tried to respond to you but it came back with a note saying it couldn't be delivered to you. Have you registered as a member yet?

Mini,

Whhhhaaaat, I don't know what you're talking about. Steelhead suck!!! Nobody should ever fish for them! They have a flu type thing that happens if you touch one, yeah, that's right, don't fish for them ever! If you see one, tell me the location and with the expert handling that I have been trained to do, I'll remove this horrible creature from the area. LOL

Thursday is a date! Do I wear the red dress this time or do you? I can't remember who wore what last.

Mini,

I've gone into more than one important meeting with fishing gear on or in the truck, how about in the morning. I have the shantie, snowmobile, rods, auger (POWER) ,anise beads and thousands of jigs. How about it?
