The big old mansion on 24 Mile near Washington that some say was haunted.

All that was left standing when I got home was a small portion facing the cemetary. I almost thought of going up to take some last pictures of it.

Someone started to a couple years ago, but I guess it was just too much to handle.

What a shame, beautiful place. I would have loved to have seen it in it's hay day. I love haunted places

Small story on it's haunted history...

New Baltimore - Hathaway House - This house use to be an insane asylum. Many people are said to have killed themselves while there. At night you can see such called ghost in the windows. When inside you hear voices. Also if you have lights they may flicker in the presents of a so-called ghost. One girl is said of killing herself in the very top floor(bell tower). -

That's not confirmed. There is an interesting 5-page thread on the house here:

http://www.ghostzoo.com/forum/Partagium/vi...?tid=621&page=1

You may have to register to read it though.

Here is a direct quote from someone in that thread:

"If you have done all your research (like, reading some of the other posts in this topic) you would have learned that Hathaway House has never been an insane asylum!
And (as I had posted before) it never was an official orphanage, but rather the FAMILY who had once owned the house had fostered children.
(I know this as fact, because I work with a woman who's sister use to date one of the foster kids.......who actually lived there!)

I know, reading it does sound like it's hearsay. It's just fun to read things like this.
Thanks for the link!

Hate to burst the bubble about the "Haunted" story but a neighbor of ours has lived New Baltimore all her life and knew the original family of the house and she said the ghost story has been made up through out the years and it's fake.

heres a website that has some pics

http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query

search by keyword "firs"

HISTORICAL HOME ON 2.66 ACRES W/ 6600+ SQ FT & 3 FLOORS OF ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES. ONCE A STATELY BED & BREAKFAST "THE FIRS OF NEW BALT." CAN BE VIEWED AT WEBSITE "DETROIT PUBLISHING" (THE FIRS). GO BACK IN TIME & ENJOY THE ELEGANCE

it was purchased for $215,000 05/2001, it then was gutted to the studs but not completed and was just sold for $250,000 on 07/25/2005

built in 1856, supposedly 6,600 sq. ft.

16 bedrooms but only two full bathrooms

sad when old homes like that are gone, but they are expensive to repair and restore, they dont make 'em like those anymore

The Hatheway is also known as The Fir's....

I do love the ghost stories surrounding this house. I have always been in love with it.

I am surprised Goose mentioned it sold. It was for sale, and everyday when I drove by I would check for a SOLD sign; never saw it, but it doesn't mean it wasn't.

At least a month or so ago in the New Baltimore Paper they reported (facts) that they city condemned the property and it was scheduled to be torn down against the current owners wishes; no resurrection. It doesn't appear the current owner was fixing it up, he was preventing more vandalism.

A couple of days later the sign came down. My guess is someone read the paper too and knew the current sellers weren't going to get the $300,000 some for it anymore so someone swooped it up for the property; nice piece of land.

I am truly sad that is is gone...

I was going to go take pictures, but my wife thought that was dumb.

I don't think it's dumb! It's a part of history in the city you live in. Unfortunately when all these houses are torn down for new subdivisions the only thing we will have are the pictures.

It truly saddens me to see this type of thing happen. Especially when you see how beautiful it was in it's glory days.
