Retired Port Huron Police Lt. Dennis Maurey was named lieutenant of the St. Clair County Marine Division.

Maurey, 54, retired from the police department Friday after 26 years with the city.

He started with the county Monday, said St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon.

Maurey is replacing Bill Krull, who retired after about 13 years with the department.

Donnellon said Maurey's strong administrative background and experience such as budgets made him the right choice.

"In today's economic climate, it's all about providing more for less," the sheriff said.

The marine division includes the county's dive team.

Donnellon said duties include patrolling the county's waterways as well as being on site for large events including the Float Down and offshore boat races.

Maurey said he was excited to take on a new challenge.

"It's a whole new experience seeing everything on the water," he said.

The marine division has about 60 part-time seasonal employees patrolling about 110 miles of shoreline.

"It's a lot of responsibility, a lot of employees," Donnellon said. "I have known Denny for two decades professionally. I'm very optimistic this is the right place, the right job at the right time
