ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency plans more cleanup work in the Ten Mile Drain, a storm sewer contaminated with toxic PCB that drains into Lake St. Clair at St. Clair Shores.

The EPA says the $864,000 project will remove contaminated sediment, install structures to collect sediment, and search for where the PCBs are entering the system.

PCBs are chemicals found to cause numerous illnesses, including cancer. The U.S. banned their use in the 1970s. The EPA spent $10 million over seven years on initial cleanup work in the Ten Mile drain and nearby canals, but tests conducted last year showed PCB levels were higher than ever.

The drain has been proposed for addition to the EPA's Superfund National Priorities List.
