Hi,

I am now hearing varying reports, including from customs, on what proof of citizenship is needed to go to Canada and stay and return to US.

I called Sarnia and they said Passport to enter Canada and i68 AND Nexus to return to US. A friend called and they said Nexus to enter canada and passport is no good.

Frankly in all the years I have gone to Canada via boat I have never checked in when returning home.

Anybody have the scoop here?

Thanks.

Here are a few links that may help you.

I've heard Nexus is your best bet because they require you to interview at a customs office to get it so they have all your info on file. It is less likely when you call in with a Nexus ID that they will require you to report for an inspection.

If you're going to travel between Sarnia and Port Huron I would recommend calling in. Lots of Customs and Coast Guard patrolling the area both on land and sea watching for boats coming across.

YMMV.

Don't do that now. Could mean Big Trouble for you and anybody else on the boat, including, but not limited to, confiscation of your boat.

I have not been to Canada by boat this year so I'm not sure what they ask for now.. In the past I was never asked for anything other then my drivers license number and MC numbers and that was the first time I went by boat about 20 years ago.. Since then because I'm in their computer I've only been asked for my name and the MC numbers on my boat.. The I-68 and Nexus from everything I've been told are used for returning to the US only not for entering into Canada. As far as not calling in when returning I'm also guilty of not doing it but I wouldn't do that now.. We were told this year at one of our AuxCG meetings that the BP would be checking ports and marina's and have witnessed boaters being checked at Metro by the Boarder Patrol when they failed to call in after returning to the US side. The Boarder Patrol has been a regular visitor to our marina this year looking for boats and people returning from Canada.
