I recently received a copy of the US Fish & Wildlife 2001 - http://www.fws.gov - angling census for Michigan:

1.354 million state residents and nonresidents 16 years old and older fished in Michigan.
1.002 million anglers (74%) were state residents and 352 thousand anglers (26%) were nonresidents.
Anglers fished a total of 19.3 million days in Michigan-an average of 14 days per angler.
State residents fished 17.6 million days, 93 percent of all fishing days within Michigan,
while nonresidents fished 1.7 million days-7 percent of all fishing days in the state.
Michigan residents spent 91 percent of their total fishing days, fishing in their resident state.

In-State Fishing Expenditures - residents and nonresidents 16 years old and older
Total $839 million
Trip-related $519 million
Equipment $263 million
-Fishing $178 million
-Auxiliary and special $85 million
Other $57 million

The following are stats by type of fish. Anglers could answer more than one fish they were specifically targeting. '***' means the sample was too small to report reliably.

They've changed or added a few fish types, so a completely direct comparison to 1996 results for some fish types will be difficult.
