Well I made my long anticipated trip to LSC and we fished HARD Fri afternoon, all day Saturday and Sunday morning. We targeted smallmouths for the most part and were basically unsuccessful, catching maybe 6 of them (5 guys fishing). Smallies were in the 2-3 lb range. Caught maybe a dozen largemouth in the 1 -1.5 lb range. We did catch three muskies, 8#, 8# and 18# and raised several others including one fish that would've been considered legal. We launched from Millers Marina (10 mi. Rd) and fished the U.S. side from there to the mouth of the Detroit River. Covered depths from 4' to the river channel. Did anyone out there do well fishing this weekend? We saw numbers of boats catching perch but most of the bass and walleye guys we talked to didn't do well.

the fishing this weekend was good in my opinion, though i only fished saturday.
the bfl had some great weights for saturday and sunday. i drew dan kimmel for the bfl on saturday and we were on them good. his first smalli was over 5 lbs and the next over 4.
this time of year the fish are starting to group up. they arent as scattered as they were a few weeks ago. the fishing becomes harder but at the same time becomes easier.
these fish are spot specific. if you can find a good group of them you will catch them. but its harder to locate them now. i fished the mile roads a week ago and struggled. two days later i fished the detroit river and did well. the difference was i was concentrated more on "spots" in the river rather than "areas" like i was two days before on the lake.
my club had a tourney on lsc on sunday. no limits and 8 lbs won it. if i could have got out of bed, i might be a little richer, i am confident i could have won the event because i know those guys were fishing community areas rather than specific spots where the fish were grouping.
if you get a chance to get out again this year, try fishing areas with good depth near by. that way you can work from the shallows to the deeper water and really saturate the area to find the fish. it doesnt hurt to have a little current either.

i never said we made it to weigh in. i only said what we caught.
unfortunatly, we had some engine trouble. the trouble was we had no engine. the motor mount snapped on our way back down the detroit river.
the bad news is we didnt get to weigh our fish.
the good news is we were safe and i think i found someone with worse luck than me

i felt bad for dan though, he had the big boy in the box and that would have put some good cash in the pocket. plus we were both in for sunday so that would have been a bit more cash too.
but thats how it goes in this game, we had fun anyway and i finally got to hang out with the man himself.

Speaking of "stinks" - a guy launching out of Millers on Sunday morning had a bad day. His truck rolled down the ramp while unloading his boat. His extended cab Chevy was pretty wet - I don't think the hood was completely submerged but the majority of his truck was underwater. The tow truck driver wasn't having any fun either wading out waist deep to hook up his chains...

the oakland county bass anglers had a tournament on lsc on sunday, and it took 17 1/2 lbs to win. there were only 2 limits of bass caught, i think, with the winners caught 10 keepers during the day, and second place only caught 5 keepers, again i think so.
another club weighed in just before us, and they had 16 1/2 lbs for their winning weight.
there was an open tournament out of selfridge on sunday, does anyone know what was the winning weight there???

There were more than two limits caught. 4 or 5 I think. Our second place weight was 13.9 and we did cull up to get there.
Bottom line, the fish are still out there but transitioning. Different areas, spots and presentations are the norm right now and changing almost daily. What worked yesterday might not work as well tomorrow, or just might load the boat. You need to keep an open mind out there right now and keep moving and changing to stay on the fish. For me, the big ones have been elusive but numbers are not much of a problem. You may just need to cover a lot of area until you find them.
The big key to watch right now is the temperature difference between the lake and the river/channels. The phenomenon of the St. Clair river being warmer than the lake played into things this past week. If anyone has been watching, the water temps in the lake fell 12 degrees in a little over one week's time which is a drastic difference in such a short time span. Almost unheard of in my memory. Until just recently we have had pretty moderate seasonal temperatures all year with very few meaningful swings in either direction. Heck, most of the weeds I've seen this week are still green and haven't even caught up and started to die off yet. Kind of explains why the floating weeds haven't been much of a problem yet, but it will be soon. I would expect the weed die-off to occur on a massive scale due to this weather scenario. Also look for the river temps to start falling to match the lake and trigger more fish movement.
Whether to fish the lake or the river will be the key logistical decision for the next few weeks.

sorry, i didn't see those fish, must have been getting my fish out of my boat. who had 13.9 lbs? we would have had around 31 or 32 lbs for 10 fish, would you have come close to that? tony and I wanted to get the largest weight in a team tournament, but were denied that because of the 5 fish limit, which we disagreed with, but had to make it work. anyways, caught all my fish with wayne's tubes, they work great. see you at the classic this weekend. This is Tony. I beleive that we have just been fortunate to find a couple of spots in pre fishing the last two months that have been consistent. The spots we found have yielded good size and numbers of bass now for 2 months without fail. But we are very fortunate. With the changing weather and water temps it could be totally different in the next few weeks. Anything could happen. The fish are bigger in the north part of the river than in the south. The water temp also doesn't affect the fish as much in deeper water. I had metioned before about having a five fish limit in team tournaments especially with the kill rate. I agree with it. But in our records the team tournaments are always 10 fish. But records don't always mean as much as saving fish. Lets hope for good weathe and good fish for the classic. I have been also fortunate to get good advice from Gerry Gostenik if it weren't for him we would not have spent a lot of the summer learning about the river. Tight Lines
